This module covers the basic processes and regulation of cell proliferation, the cell cycle and cell death. An appreciation of the role of oncogenes and tumour suppressor genes is central to an understanding of the molecular basis of carcinogenesis and the properties of cancer cells. Environmental and genetic factors in cancer, tumour immunology and cancer therapies are also covered. Concepts from cell biology, genetics, immunology, histopathology, and anatomy are included. The practical component of the module, which allows students to apply the concepts covered in the theory component, will introduce students to materials, equipment and laboratory techniques that are frequently used in oncology laboratories such as flow cytometry and immunofluorescence.
