Students will examine the relationship between the psychological state and physical performance in sports and exercise. The course will enable them to apply psychological principles and interventions to different population segments, from competitive athletes to the elderly and persons with disabilities. Topics covered include attributions, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, self-efficacy and self-confidence. Techniques for dealing with attention and concentration challenges and stress will also be taught, along with visualisation, goal setting and self-talk for performance enhancement. Concepts such as aggression, burnout and injuries will also be covered.
