This module teaches students to analyse and critique games and play experiences using appropriate theory and frameworks. The module examines the attributes that make traditional, board and digital games appealing. Students learn how game attributes such as rules, themes, genres, player types, formal elements, dramatic elements, immersion, and narratives combine to produce an attractive play experience. Students gain insights into why certain games have wide appeal. They do this by deconstructing both the design and player experience.
Throughout the module, students learn how to apply game analysis techniques to their own games and gamification projects.
