Board and Card Game Design provides students with foundational knowledge and skills required to design board and card games. Students learn how to create an engaging, entertaining, and balanced gameplay experience for these traditional formats using the ‘Mechanics, Dynamics, Aesthetic’ (MDA) framework. Students learn that a game is crafted to create an intended ‘user experience’ by manipulating these three dimensions. The module is practical in nature; students create rapid paper prototypes in class based on industry briefs. Students critique the effectiveness of the gameplay experience they create, and suggest ways to improve the gameplay experience for any given game.
