Focusing on both the technical and managerial aspects of airline and airport operations, this course will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to pursue a rewarding career in the aviation industry.

This Specialist Diploma in Aviation Management and Services is a one year programme targeted at either working adults who wish to embark on a career in the aviation industry or anyone who wish to upgrade and deepen their skills for career progression. 

It trains participants in numerous Technical Skills and Competencies across several job roles as listed in the Air Transport Skills Framework. These skills will enable students to be versatile so that they can deployed across different job roles whereby they will be able to integrate and apply their experience, skills and knowledge to handle new situations.

Post-Diploma Certificate (PDC) Synopses


1. Post-Diploma Certificate in Aerodrome Management 

The Post-Diploma Certificate (PDC) in Aerodrome Management is intended to equip students with (i) the requisite concepts and theories that enable efficient airport operations in both landside and airside, and (ii) the fundamental activities and technological developments in deepening aviation-related technical competencies. 

The PDC consists of the following 4 modules:

Passenger Services Management

This module provides an insight to the service quality requirements and standards in the aviation industry. Students will be able to discuss the different operational procedures and processes in passenger flow, and analyze performance measures to determine how passengers are handled. Students will be able to apply operational brand concepts and standards to the aviation industry, and examine how these standards can be used to improve the competitiveness of the airport and airlines. This module also equips students on how different countries have adopted various technologies in expediting passenger flow.

Airport Engineering and Operations

This module provides an insight on how an aerodrome operator can ensure both high serviceability and efficient operations of all its airport facilities. In airport engineering, students will be able to explain the maintenance of airport infrastructure, operational standards for airport facilities and routine maintenance procedures of the organisation. In airport operations, students can relate to the duties of an Airport Operation Centre, the different emergency situations in the aviation industry, the notification processes for accidents, and the corresponding classifications and Standard Operating Procedures.

Airside Operations and Ramp Services

This module provides an insight to wide array of activities that occur on both airside and ramp areas. In airside operations, students will be able to comprehend the different operational procedures in airside, airside safety standards, airfield signals, signs and markings, inspection and reporting techniques for airside operations, and wildlife management. In ramp services, students will differentiate the various aircraft turnaround activities, aircraft delays and disruptions, aircraft loading and unloading procedures, and risky situations during turnaround. Together as a module, collaborative decision making will be studied to understand the synergies and how these activities are closely intertwined.

Load Control and Air Cargo Operations

This module provides an insight to safe and efficient operations required in both load control and air cargo. In load control, students will be able to employ key concepts in aircraft load planning to evaluate various aircraft performance indicators. They will also be able to prepare the different types of load sheets and calculate aircraft weight and balance. In air cargo, students will be able to explain pre-loading, post-loading and post-charging documentation, cargo security check processes, cargo receipt and inspection, and air cargo warehousing operations. The relationship between the loading of an aircraft and both freighter and belly-hold cargo will be studied to emphasis the inter-dependency between the two.
 

2. Post-Diploma Certificate in Airline Management 

The PDC in Airline Management is intended to equip students with (i) the essential concepts and key activities that ensures smooth day-to-day operations, and (ii) parameters on the business environment and managerial concepts to succeed in an increasingly dynamic airline industry. 

The PDC consists of the following 4 modules:

Aircraft and Flight Operations

This module provides an insight to the heart of an airline, whereby pilots and flight dispatchers ensure safe and efficient aircraft performance during all phases of its flight. In aircraft operations, students will be recognise the variables affecting optimal aircraft performance, and interpret flight data and aircraft performance results, navigation charts and fuel management on board the aircraft. These concepts will not only enable high aircraft performance during cruise, it will also ensure safe take-off and landing in varying runway environments. In flight operations, students will be able to interpret to Notices to Airmen, principles of air law, flight planning and navigation, fuel calculation procedures and flight planning systems. These concepts enable safe dispatch of aircraft and optimal execution of flight plans.

Airline Marketing and Revenue Management

This module provides an in-depth understanding to optimising revenue in the airline industry. It provides a framework for the students to examine the factors that contribute to the commercial success of an airline. Students will evaluate and apply airline key performance indicators, rate plans, booking trends and patterns to forecast and devise marketing and revenue plans. Students will also apply principles and techniques across various airline business environments to optimise revenue, yield, and profitability and concurrently balance both customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.

Ground Services and Aviation Safety

This module provides an insight to the passenger experience beyond what was received in the aircraft, that is, the treatment of passengers in the airport and the safety assurance provided by the airline. In ground services, students will be able to demonstrate customer handling, station budget management, irregular operations and Service Level Agreements. In aviation safety, students will be exposed to the emergency response plans, and the numerous regulations used by airlines, such as Dangerous Goods Regulations, International Air Transport Association (IATA) Ground Operations Manual and Safety Management Systems. This module also equips students with an appreciation of emerging technologies and updated regulations in both areas.

Airline Business Management

This module provides an understanding of the business environment that airline companies operate in, as well as the knowledge and analytical skills to examine management and operational functions unique to the airline industry. The airline industry today is constantly changing. As such, the aviation industry requires future leaders to be well-versed in current and emerging management practices, with the versatility to adapt to market trends and developments. Students will not only be able to understand how an airline business is managed from a broad perspective, but also apply the concepts and theories taught to daily issues and trends.

  • Applicants  should have a relevant (Engineering or Hospitality) diploma or degree. They should also have at least 2 years of relevant working experience. 

  • Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission to the course based on evidence of at least 5 years of relevant working experience or supporting evidence of competency readiness. Suitable applicants who are shortlisted will have to go through an interview and/or entrance test. The Polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit applicants.
