CyberSecurity Essentials

Get ready for the expanding world of cyber security with the CyberSecurity Essentials programme! In the age of rapid digital information exchange, cybersecurity has become a crucial focus for many organisations to ensure business continuity and quality customer experience to end consumers.

Training a cybersecurity workforce is therefore essential to equip your organisation with the relevant skills and principles to protect against ever growing threats.

In this one-day foundational programme, you will learn the fundamental concepts and issues related to securing a personal computing environment, as well as within an organisation computing environment and the various implementations of information security controls.

Recognising, identifying and mitigating against various security threats such as phishing websites, phishing emails, spams, malware will be covered in this course in a very pragmatic and practical fashion for the layperson. In addition, this programme will also cover the physical and technical measures in protecting personal data and devices.

Entry Requirement

This course is suitable for participants with minimal or no prior knowledge on cybersecurity.

Certification

Participants will be awarded a certificate of completion upon meeting the 75% course attendance requirement.

For courses with assessment component, participants will be awarded the certification of completion upon passing the assessment. Otherwise, a certification of attendance will be issued instead upon meeting the 75% course attendance requirement.

Trainer’s Profile

James ThamJames Tham. James started his career as an engineer in the Operational Technology (OT) space where he was responsible for the design and implantation of electrical and instrumentation systems for wastewater treatment facilities. He later pivoted to IT where he spent 13 years in the public sector where he managed the IT infrastructure and IT security in various government agencies.

He joined Republic Polytechnic in 2010 as a senior lecturer and has developed and taught security modules such as IT Security & Management, Ethical Hacking, Intrusion Detection & Prevention, Digital Forensics, IT Compliance, Cloud Security and Security Incident Response Management. He is currently the Programme Chair of the Diploma in Infocomm Security Management.

James is extremely passionate about cybersecurity and is a Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP) since 2002. He is also a member of the Association of Information Security Professionals (AISP), Singapore and has actively contributed to the AISP’s Information Security Book of Knowledge (IS BOK) 2.0. James was appointed as a member of the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) expert panel in the area of IT Security and Cloud Computing since 2017. James obtained the GIAC Response & Industrial Defense (GRID) certification from SANS.

James holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electronic & Electrical Engineering as well as a Master’s degree in Systems Engineering.

James has conducted courses for various organizations, including SP Services, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, SME Centre, SICCI, Sopra Steria Asia, M1, and the Thai Bankers' Association.



Gibbsen OmarGibbsen Omar holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (Digital Systems Security) from University of Wollongong and a Master’s degree in Business (Information Technology) from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University. He also holds professional certifications such as Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist, Cisco Certified Network Associate, Certified Ethical Hacker and GIAC Penetration Tester (GPEN).

Gibbsen has conducted cybersecurity courses catering to attendees from Beyonics Pte Ltd , ITE and interested individuals.



Mark YinMark Yin. With more than three decades of experience in the IT industry under his belt, Mark is a seasoned professional in the field. His journey began as a Systems Analyst for Telstra Ltd in Western Australia before moving to Singapore to work as an applications Project Manager for Hitachi Asia. His tenure there saw him take on the critical responsibility of implementing data security policies and internal controls for the region.

In 2014, Mark joined Republic Polytechnic as a Senior Manager for IT security and compliance. He leads a team in implementing and operationalizing the Government's cyber and data security policies, standards, and guidelines. Mark believes in the importance of education and awareness in any cybersecurity defence strategy, which is why he conducts annual cybersecurity e-learning sessions for non-fulltime staff and phishing drills for the entire staff. He is also the creator of Republic Polytechnic's quarterly security newsletter, SecureByte.

Mark is a Bachelor of Business in Information Systems graduate from Edith Cowan University.

Mark has conducted courses catering to attendees from Takashimaya, Ministry of Environment and interested individuals.



Mapel YapMapel Yap graduated from the University of London with a first-class bachelor’s degree in Computing and Information Systems with Honours. She has been a Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) since 2007 and received her Palo Alto Networks Accredited Configuration Engineer (ACE) certificate in 2015. Mapel is also certified in SANs Global Response and Industrial Defense (GRID).

Mapel has over five years of industry experience in network administration, information technology security and management, and security information management. In 2016, she collaborated with RSA Security and setup the RP-RSA Security Operations Centre teaching lab at Republic Polytechnic. The lab has provided an authentic learning experience for students in the Diploma in Infocomm Security Management. In 2018, Mapel was one of the technical experts for WorldSkills Singapore (Cyber Security). She will be in the same position at WorldSkills Singapore 2023.



Edmond KhooEdmond Khoo holds Master of Science Degree from Nanyang Technological University. He has over 12 years of working experience in the technology industry, working in various roles across Research Centres, Tertiary Institutions and Statutory Boards. As a seasoned professional, he had overseen service delivery, vendor engagement, operation management, security enforcement and policy compliance.

Currently, he is responsible for teaching final year students and module development for Diploma in Infocomm Security Management as well as cybersecurity short courses for M1 and interested individuals.



Pauline ChinPauline Chin. Pauline has a strong interest in Cyber Security and Networking technologies. Her career journey ranges from media, telco, financial services to academia involving in network security, architecture design, implementation of different security controls cum audit and review . She believes that practical and analytical skills are not only fundamental part of academic excellence but are also the building blocks in critical thinking in life. She is happy to share her experiences and ideas while at the same time keen to learn from others. She joined Republic Polytechnic in 2021 as a senior lecturer and had taught modules relating to inter-networking technologies, cloud computing, intrusion detection and incident response.

Pauline holds a Computing and Information Systems degree and possesses a string of certifications such as Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP) and Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA). She has also obtained the Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional (GICSP) from SANS.
