About the Course

About the Course

The education and training landscape has evolved drastically in the recent years, with elements of interactivity such as gamification and mixed realities strongly making their mark in online learning environments. As a result, the demand for Education Technology (EdTech) professionals has grown steadily in educational institutions, corporate training companies, and organisations with inhouse training departments.

To meet the needs of today’s learners, Republic Polytechnic’s Centre for Educational Development and School of Technology for the Arts have jointly crafted the Specialist Diploma in Immersive EdTech Design for Learning (SDETD). The SDETD will empower course participants to package any subject into engaging EdTech content for intended learners/target audience to effectively achieve desired learning outcomes.

Graduates of this Specialist Diploma will acquire essential skills to:

  1. Analyse learning needs and requirements of intended learners (target audience) and/or key stakeholders for the design and development of learning content.
  2. Develop learner-centred EdTech content of high immersive and interactivity levels with assessments (i.e., Game-based Learning / Mixed Reality / 3D Simulation).
  3. Evaluate the effectiveness of EdTech content in the attainment of learning outcomes.

Target Audience

  • Diploma graduates in Design and Applied Arts, Media Production and Education, Mass Communication, and Information Technology
  • HR practitioners, educators and professionals who are keen to develop knowledge and skillsets to produce EdTech content
  • Individuals who are keen to explore new opportunities in the growing EdTech industry

What is so unique about this programme?

With a key focus on design and pedagogy, SDETD aims to develop strong EdTech content developers who can produce interactive learner-centric e-Learning packages with performance evaluation in mind. This one-year part-time course will equip aspiring e-Learning content developers with strong instructional design capabilities and professional pedagogical skills.

Graduates of SDETD could look forward to job opportunities by private education providers, public education institutions, companies specialising in e-Learning solutions, and organisations with inhouse training departments.

How often do I need to attend the course?

Lessons will be held two times a week at RP ACE @ Woodlands.

Module Synopsis

1. Post-Diploma Certificate in Learning Content Development

Analyse Learning Needs and Develop Curriculum for Technology Enhanced Learning (30 hours)

Students will learn how to design an effective technology enhanced learning (TEL) curriculum to meet the desired learning outcomes, based on the learning needs analysis and guided by evidence-based curriculum design models. Students will be introduced to different and emergent assessment strategies aligned with effective assessment principles to evaluate and support learning. Students will also have an opportunity to design effective TEL lessons guided by established instructional models and explore the different ways to incorporate learner-learner, learner-content, and learner-teacher interactions to deliver an optimal online learning experience.

2D Art Asset Creation (30 hours)

This practical module teaches the fundamentals of 2D art design. Students will learn the iterative design process through which they can create convincing and attractive 2D art assets to meet learning solution needs. Character and prop model sheets, user interfaces, functionality diagrams and simple animated sequences are among tools taught. Other techniques students will pick up include basic shape construction, silhouette and thumbnail creation and colour theory.

3D Art Asset Creation (30 hours)

3D Art Asset Creation covers the skills and techniques needed to create 3D art assets such as characters, creatures, props, and environmental assets for games, and other digital media. Students will learn how to model 3D objects, and then apply textures and rig and animate them. Students will also learn to optimise and prepare 3D assets to be imported into a game engine.

Immersive Reality (30 hours)

This module introduces the core concepts of AR, VR, MR and 360° Content for creating immersive experiences. Students will learn about various immersive technologies, how they are created, have hands-on practice with the equipment needed and appreciate how these tools can be used in various ways to engage audiences for a specific purpose.

2. Post-Diploma Certificate in Gamification and Learning Design

Design and Develop Assessment for Technology Enhanced Learning (15 hours)

Students will learn assessment principles and apply them in designing assessment items/instruments for summative, formative and feedback purposes. They will review the dynamics between assessment creation and the affordance of different modes, designs, and tools.

Games and Gamification for Learning (30 hours)

This module provides students with fundamental game design knowledge and skills to plan, develop, and implement the use of games and gamification in a learning environment. Students will learn to identify suitable games for learning and apply game design skills to craft entertaining experiences to improve the effectiveness of learning materials. Students will also be able to apply principles of gamification to improve the engagement in the learning environment, and to improve and shape learning behaviours.

Creating Adventure Games for Learning (30 hours)

This practical module introduces the core knowledge and skills needed to create a text-based adventure game for learning. Students will learn how to create a highly interactive learning game with a text input to effectively engage a target audience..

Visual Design (30 hours)

In this module, students will be introduced to visual design theories and principles. Students will learn how colour theory, gestalt principles, ratio and proportion, visual hierarchy, and other fundamental visual design concepts can be applied to the design of user interfaces. By the end of the module, students will be able to create the visual design of a user interface using industry-relevant tools and techniques, as well as critique user interface designs and layouts.

e-Authoring Design and Publishing (30 hours)

e-Authoring Design and Publishing module provides students with knowledge and skills to create engaging digital learning content using text, media, and interactions. This module teaches students to arrange and manipulate both ready-to-use and customised assets hence giving them the ability to cater to unique project demands.

By the end of the module, students will be able to develop and convert their interactive content into various formats for Learning Management Systems.
