About the Course

The Specialist Diploma in IoT Technologies and Solutioning (SDITS) equips participants with the range of skills to be an IoT Solutions Architect.  Upon completion of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the concepts associated with Internet of Things (IoT), its usage and business case in various settings.
  • List, describe and apply the various components and technologies used in architecting IoT solutions. These include data analytics, big data platforms, cloud computing platforms and machine learning.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders and partners to analyse and determine the business problem.
  • Translate business requirements into specific IoT system applications, and process designs while developing functional requirements and solutions designs, complete with consideration for security and appropriate Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and Return of Investment (ROI) assessments.
  • Architect an IoT solution that will solve the problem and deliver value to the business.
  • Build an IoT solution prototype.

Target Audience

Diploma or degree-level graduates and professionals who aspire to progress to the next stage of their careers as IoT Solution Architects. This programme is also suitable for participants who aspires to be an IoT Engineer.

What is so unique about this programme?

This programme will equip you with the range of skills to be an IoT Solutions Architect. Upon completion, you will be able to:

  • Explain and apply IoT concepts in various settings
  • Analyse and determine business problems
  • Appreciate and adopt various technologies used in architecting IoT solutions
  • Build an IoT solution prototype

How often do I need to attend the course?

Lessons will be held two times a week at Republic Polytechnic, Woodlands.
Course commences in June.

The Specialist Diploma in IoT Technologies and Solutioning (SDITS) is a 12-month, 240-hour part-time programme. It consists of 2 Post-Diploma Certificates (see table below).

Participants will be awarded a Post-Diploma Certificate (PDC) upon successful completion of the certificate programme. The Specialist Diploma in IoT Technologies and Solutioning will be issued upon meeting 50% of attendance requirement and passing the assessment criteria of both PDCs.

This includes self-learning hours in the form of e-learning, assessments, case study analysis and revision required by the module. 

* For the series of 4 modules in the Post-Diploma Certificate in Fundamentals of Internet of Things namely (i) 3D Printing Fundamentals, (ii) Engineering Basics, (iii) System and Programming Basics and (iv) Introductory Statistics and Analytics, students may be granted exemption from these modules on the basis of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). The module(s) exemption via RPL is subject to a formal application from the student, and upon assessment of the RPL evidence or passing of an exemption test on the said subject in accordance to the RPL framework as approved by MOE and implemented across the Polytechnics

Module Synopses


1. Post-Diploma Certificate in Fundamentals of Internet of Things 

Automation and Connectivity

This module will cover the basic engineering and computer science concepts and ideas required for end-to-end Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. Students will learn the basics of sensors, embedded systems programming, IoT messaging protocols such as MQTT, communication networks and programmable logic controllers that contribute to enabling the Internet of Things. Students will learn to apply their skills and knowledge in a hands-on and practical manner.

Analytics and Machine Learning

This module will cover introductory statistics, analytics and machine learning concepts and workflows that are applied in IoT solutions. Students will also learn the skills required to undertake database design and big data architecture and management.
 
2. Post-Diploma Certificate in Advanced Applications in Internet of Things

Architecting IoT Solutions

This module covers the business case development, design and deployment plan of IoT solutions. Business case development will cover the technical and non-technical aspects when solutioning for IoT. Building on the technologies learned regarding sensors, networking security, analytics, machine learning and various IoT platforms, students will architect IoT solutions. This module will be covering multiple industry case studies.

IoT Project

In this module, students will demonstrate their competencies in architecting, designing and building prototype IoT solutions in response to problem scenarios that are provided by industry partners.

Student will work in teams and will be required to synthesise and apply the IoT knowledge and skills acquired to real-world issues and opportunities. Students can also use this module to further deepen their skills in specific domains of their interest.

Students will be required to attend a series of design thinking workshops and to come up with a proposal for their project based on the problem scenarios. Once the project proposals are submitted, students will be matched with their respective project supervisors and sponsors for further consultation.

Applicants should possess a relevant local polytechnic Diploma or Degree in computer science, information technology, electrical, electronic, telecommunication, communication, instrumentation, control engineering, or a related field. 

Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission to the course based on evidence of at least 5 years of relevant working experience or supporting evidence of competency readiness. Suitable applicants who are shortlisted will have to go through an interview and/or entrance test. The Polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit applicants.
