About the Course

This Work-Study Programme (WSP) will provide opportunities for fresh Polytechnic graduates to deepen their skills and knowledge needed for a career in the medical technology and healthcare related industries. Suitable candidates will be matched with a relevant job offered by a WSP partner company, in opportunities such as:

  • biomedical engineer
  • service engineer
  • clinical application specialist
  • product/technical specialist

The WSP partner company will provide 12-month structured on-the-job training and mentorship, to better support WSP participants' transition into the workforce. The participants will also be sponsored by their employers to undertake part-time upgrading through the Specialist Diploma in Biomedical Technology (SDBT).

The SDBT focuses on offering in-depth knowledge and application on various principles, applications, technology and design of medical sensors, devices and instruments commonly used in biomedical sector. These include, but are not limited to, cardiac devices, ophthalmological devices, biomedical implant, spirometer, medical imaging instruments, and etc.

The Work-Study Post-Diploma aims to provide a pathway for career development and further education through two (2) Post-Diploma Certificates (PDCs). At the end of this programme, participants will be awarded a Specialist Diploma in Biomedical Technology. Participants who complete the WSP will also receive $5,000 incentive.

What is so unique about this programme?

The Work-Study Post-Diploma in Biomedical Technology is a collaboration between Republic Polytechnic (RP) and Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS). By the end of the programme, you will gain a strong foundation in biomedical instrumentation and device design. You will also be equipped with the skills and knowledge to support medical professionals.

Under the Work-Study Post-Diploma programme, you may enjoy additional benefits such as sign-on incentive with full-time employment, assigned company mentor, well-structured training, and career advancement opportunities.

This programme also provides an articulation path for graduates who wish to further their studies with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering at SUSS.

Participants take 12 months to complete the two certifications during this Work-Study Programme.  The Specialist Diploma in Biomedical Technology will be issued upon meeting 50% of attendance requirement and passing the assessment criteria of both PDCs.

This includes self-learning hours in the form of e-learning, assessments, case study analysis and revision required by the module.

Module Synopses

1. Post-Diploma Certificate in Biomedical Instrumentation

Biomedical Sensors and Measurements

The aim of this course is to teach students the principles, design and applications of the medical sensors and measurement technology commonly used in the healthcare industry. Fundamental principles of sensors and devices will be covered and systemic analysis and design will also be introduced. The student will also learn about digital healthcare with emphasis on personalized biomedical devices.

Medical Imaging

This course covers various aspects of medical imaging, image processing and visualisation. Topics include X-Ray, Magnetic Resonance, Functional Infrared Thermal imaging and Ultrasonic Imaging, as well as more specialized techniques for dynamic studies of specific body functions. The importance of electronics medical images transmission through cloud and cybersecurity will also be covered in this module.

Biomedical Instrumentation and Systems

The aim of this course is to teach students the principles, design and applications of the medical instruments most commonly used in the healthcare industry. Quantitative methods of analysis are developed including simplifying assumptions to make the students understand and design an instrumentation system for diagnostic and therapeutic medical applications. Integration of systems through Internet of Things (IoT) and the concept of networking will be introduced.

On- the-job training cum project

Students on the Work-Study Programme track will be involved in an On-the-Job training (OJT) at their place of employment. A project on designing/regulating biomedical devices will be structured with the employer. Students are expected to execute the project at the workplace. Through hands-on experience in designing and improving biomedical devices, students will acquire a greater understanding of progress and advancement of tools used in healthcare. Non-Work-Study Programme track students will be assigned in-house projects in place of the OJT component.

2. Post-Diploma Certificate in Biomedical Device Development 

Biomedical Device

Students will be introduced to the wide range of biomedical devices such as cardiac devices (including heart valves, stents, pace makers, catheters, etc), dental implants, ophthalmological devices, drug delivery techniques, auditory devices, and diagnostic tools. Students will also learn about sterilisation, evaluation and failure analysis of implants and medical devices.

Human Factors and Systems Design

This module is about understanding human strengths and limitations as well as designing systems that fit them. It gives students an overview of the underlying philosophy, aims and approaches of human centered system design. Students are introduced to the human sensory and physiological systems and cognitive processes. They are exposed to basic principles of designing and evaluating workplaces and interfaces. Issues on accidents, human error and safety design are also covered in this course.


The course aims to provide students with a general understanding of a wide range of biomaterials made from appropriate metals, ceramics, and polymers (including natural and synthetic polymers). Included in the course are relevant fundamental details that link factors such as bonding, structure, processing parameters and microstructures to the properties of biomaterials. These fundamentals will equip students to understand the mechanical, chemical and physical behaviour of materials when used in biomedical applications.

Credit Exemption

Participants who have completed the Specialist Diploma in Biomedical Technology qualification may be granted credits exemption of up to one year towards completion of the Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering, at Singapore University of Social Sciences.

WSP Eligibility

Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents who are: 
- within three years of graduation from the Polytechnics or the Operational Ready Date (ORD) for full-time National Servicemen, or
- within five years of graduation from the Polytechnics, and if their employer is a participating company.

Course Entry Requirement

Applicants should preferably be a graduate of a feeder programme as listed here.

Admission will be reviewed and approved by the polytechnic on a case-by-case basis.
