Fundamentals of Smart Biomedical Device

The rise of an ageing and health-conscious population has driven the development of enabling healthcare technologies. This not only helped to move the point of care closer to the patient, but also augmented the role of the patient in managing his or her own health.

This course serves to create awareness about the basics and trends of health monitoring. Various medical devices can be useful in managing one’s own health. Participants will learn how smart medical devices can be used to improve or monitor their health and keep up to date on recent developments in these medical devices. This course will enlighten on various aspects of medical devices such as classifications, working mechanism and regulation. Participants will then be able to evaluate any healthcare devices that they use.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • understand the various aspects of medical devices such as its classifications, working mechanisms and regulation

  • build lab-based glucose monitoring device and recognise its development trend

  • evaluate and choose personal healthcare monitoring devices that suit one’s needs

Entry Requirement

Participants are expected to be familiar with the operation of a PC, and have basic internet search knowledge.


Participants will be awarded the Certificate of Accomplishment by Republic Polytechnic upon meeting 80% of the attendance.


Besides learning about the importance of healthcare, we were also given a hands-on experience with some smart medical devices such as the Pulse Oximeter and learned how they are able to connect to phone applications for the ease of tracking. With the fast advancement of technology, it sure was an eye-opening two-day workshop, learning how drastically medical devices have changed over the years to conform to different needs. I’m sure that this workshop will benefit me in the future.
