Implementing IT Security @ Work

IT security is an area of high priority for both individuals and organisations. Organisations require staff to be equipped with the requisite IT security skills and knowledge to handle and manage cyber security threats. 

This course introduces participants to the issues surrounding the cyber security of an organisation. On top of various implementations of information security controls, the course will also cover issues such as IT security standards, IT management frameworks, administrative, physical and technical measures in protecting personal data and devices. 

Laptops will be provided for the duration of the course

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • recognise the need for security in computer systems and how security affects individuals in an organisation
  • explain basic cyber security terminology, concepts and principles (e.g. 3P’s, CIA) 
  • describe basic authentication mechanisms  
  • improve password security 
  • explain and differentiate between various malicious software (malware) e.g. viruses, worms, trojan horses and the harm that they can cause 
  • describe different malware propagation methods 
  • prevent malware infections 
  • explain software security challenges
  • describe software vulnerabilities and attacks that can exploit them
  • describe defences that can prevent or mitigate against attacks to software
  • explain basic networking concepts and key networking standards
  • describe network security challenges
  • describe firewalls, virtual private networks, penetration testing and network intrusion detection and prevention technologies
  • describe the legal and regulatory issues relating to cyber security in Singapore 
  • develop skills for keeping up to date on cyber security issues 

Who should attend?

Professionals, Managers, Executives and Technicians (PMETs) interested in the fundamental concepts of cyber security in an organisational context.

Suitable for all levels of experience 


Participants will be awarded the Certificate of Attendance by Republic Polytechnic upon meeting 80% of attendance requirement.
