The Fundamentals of Digital Forensics

The advent of the cyber universe presents boundless possibilities, including the potential for crime. 

This course will equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills in the area of computer security and digital forensics. Topics ranging from cryptography and steganography to malware will be covered. In addition, participants will also be trained on the principles, tools, techniques and concepts used in digital forensics investigations. 

This course will provide an understanding of the approaches involved in retrieving digital information relevant to appropriate cybercrime laws. Participants will also develop a methodical approach in implementing the procedures.

Laptops will be provided for the duration of the course.

Learning Objectives 

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • describe the processes involved in digital forensic investigations
  • apply the necessary procedures in evidence seizure
  • apply the use of tools to perform duplication and imaging of digital evidence
  • identify the location of evidence in different operating and file systems
  • apply the use of tools to locate, examine and analyse evidence in digital storage devices
  • apply the use of tools to perform password recovery
  • recognise the potential need and application of steganography to uncover hidden messages and data in digital media in a digital forensic investigation
  • recognise the need to use cryptanalysis to decipher information in a digital forensic investigation
  • apply the use of tools to inspect file systems
  • explain and identify the types of data collected in a live forensics analysis

Professionals, Managers, Executives and Technicians (PMETs) who are keen in the fundamental concepts of digital forensics.

Participants will be awarded the Certificate of Attendance by Republic Polytechnic upon meeting 80% of attendance requirement.
