Beginner Computer-Aided Design Course

Ever wondered how products are designed?

Find out for yourself through this introductory course where you will be introduced to the fundamentals of Computer-Aided Design (CAD). To facilitate your learning experience, there will be hands-on sessions on basic, common, and practical CAD skills in this course.

Participants will get the chance to familiarise themselves with the Autodesk Fusion 360 CAD software, as they learn about visualisation of three-dimensional (3D) models and explore related product design functions. They will also acquire the basic skills needed to create 3D models of their own designs.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Create design concepts using two-dimensional (2D) sketch
  • Develop design concepts using 3D modelling
  • Prepare 3D models for prototyping such as 3D printing
  • Build assembly of 3D models and examine designs
  • Construct engineering drawings from 3D models
  • Compose an animation of an assembly to show all its components

Who Should Attend?

Hobbyists, 3D printing enthusiasts, and individuals who wish to learn more about design, product design, and CAD.

Entry Requirement

Participants are expected to be familiar the general operation of a computer such as opening and saving files.

No prior experience of CAD is needed.

Certification

Participants will be awarded a certificate of completion upon meeting the 75% course attendance requirement.

For courses with formal assessment component, participants will be awarded the certification of completion upon passing the assessment. Otherwise, a certification of attendance will be issued instead upon meeting the 75% course attendance requirement.

Participants will be awarded a certificate of completion from Autodesk upon completion of the course.

Trainer's Profile

Ms. Angela Chng graduated from Nanyang Technological University with a degree in Mechanical and Production Engineering. She has more than a decade of experience using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software in the industry. Prior to joining Republic Polytechnic (RP) as a lecturer in 2015, she was a Product Designer involved in creating machines for assembly and testing. She also worked on areas such as design, prototyping, assembly, testing, and marketing.

Mr. Chua Swee Cheng holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National University of Singapore. Currently, he is a lecturer at Republic Polytechnic. Swee Cheng has several years of product design and development experience. He started his career as a product development engineer before moving into product design. He was involved in the design and development of various products, from household appliances to commercial items such as hand dryers. Swee Cheng had used computer-aided design software of different brands throughout his career.

Mr. Edmund Tan is the Programme Chair and lecturer at Republic Polytechnic. He started his career as an engineer and has worked in various fields including Information Technology and Networking, at the Bioinformatics Institute under A*STAR. Edmund also holds a certification in Autodesk Fusion 360 and is a certified adult trainer. He graduated from Nanyang Technological University with a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and a master’s degree in Communication Software & Networks. He also holds a Master of Applied Finance from Singapore Management University.

Mr. Keegan Teo joined Republic Polytechnic in 2019. He graduated from Nanyang Technological University with a bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering. Keegan started his professional career as an aerospace engineer, specialising in aircraft materials. He then established a three-dimensional (3D) printing business which offered design, prototyping, and consultancy services in 2015. As a trainer, Keegan is experienced in conducting 3D design and printing workshops for primary, as well as secondary schools in Singapore.

Ms. Wendy Ang obtained her Masters of Science (Mechanical Engineering) and Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) degrees from Nanyang Technological University. She is a lecturer under the Diploma in Engineering Design with Business at Republic Polytechnic’s School of Engineering. She also manages and conducts classes for part-time diploma programmes related to Operations and Production Planning. In addition, Wendy teaches Continuing Education and Training courses on Design Thinking and Computer Aided Design. Her prior work experience as an Instrument Design Engineer at Emerson Process Management (Oil and Gas Applications) and Product Engineer at Cal-Comp Electronics (Printer Design) enables her to relate well to various applications of design in the industrial and consumer industry.
