Strategies to Improve Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) for Air-conditioned and Naturally Ventilated Places

Do you know that people spend almost 65% of a 70 years life span under indoor air? Do you also know that your health is not only due to genetics and lifestyle but also affected by indoor environmental exposure? Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and Thermal Environment (TE) play a highly significant role in human health. 

How can you improve indoor air quality and help to prevent the spread of infectious diseases? What are the ways to maintain indoor air quality and reduce long-term exposure to pollution? 

If you are worried about how to maintain better indoor air quality, this workshop is for you. This course allows you to learn and apply various strategies and methods which can be practiced at both personal and work places for the improvement of indoor environmental health.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Identify the various airborne contaminants  which affect indoor environmental health 
  • Recognize the role of thermal environment in the risk of infectious diseases
  • Learn common practices and the technologies used in the various air-conditioned facilities
  • Identify common strategies at residential or work places to lower the risk of acute transmission and improve indoor environmental health

This course is suitable for both professionals and individuals who are keen to plan for better home and workplace management for airborne disease control.

Entry Requirement

Basic science and engineering diploma or degree holders

Certification

Participants will be awarded a certificate of completion upon meeting the 75% course attendance requirement.

For courses with formal assessment component, participants will be awarded the certification of completion upon passing the assessment. Otherwise, a certification of attendance will be issued instead upon meeting the 75% course attendance requirement.

Trainer's Profile

Dr. Papia has obtained Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering from National University of Singapore. She specializes in absorption cooling, transport phenomena and thermal system design. She has 15 years of academic and research experience in Singapore. Dr. Papia is the Joint Industry Lab Manager of RP Daikin HVAC Solutions Laboratory and has a good track record in demonstrating R&D capabilities to the energy industries. She has been leading various funded projects in the areas of strategical improvement of energy efficiency in building air-conditioning system and low energy environmental solution for urban farming. 

Dr. Papia is instrumental to building Republic Polytechnic’s capabilities in Urban solution and sustainability. One of such courses led and conducted by her was Skills Future Series (SFS) course on “Energy and Indoor Air Quality Assessment for Buildings with Central Air-conditioning System”. 

Dr. Papia is also a member of the ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers).

Mr. Toh Wai Yin graduated in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from National University of Singapore. He has a specialist diploma in Info-comm Technology and is a certified Green Mark Manager (GMM). 

Wai Yin has over 10 years of experience in system integration design and project management in his previous role as the System Team Lead from ST Electronics. He has led a team to design and implement the communication solution that was integrated to the electrical meters for the monitoring of the energy consumption in selected households and to provide a mean for demand response control of industrial energy loads.

With his current role as the lab manager of RP- FLUKE Energy Audit Lab in Republic Polytechnic, Wai Yin leads various consultancy projects and training for different companies particularly in the area of green building energy audit and energy management.
