In this module, students develop a set of thinking skills that enable them to understand a given story (in terms of its constituent parts and as a whole), to critique the effectiveness of the story, and to suggest ways to improve the story. The aim of the module is to provide students with a general understanding of the basic elements of story, and how they work together to create an engaging and entertaining experience for an audience. It is based on the premise that a story is a creative construction that uses certain basic elements in a specific manner, with Main Character as the foundation. This construction exploits and builds upon the ways in which human beings naturally perceive and react to the world, dramatising the experience in order to heighten its emotional impact, while expressing the author’s opinion about some aspects of life at the same time.
