Striving Towards an Inclusive Future
Amidst growing awareness and support from the Enabling Masterplan, a greater number of companies are embracing the hiring of individuals with special needs. However, there still remain challenges to achieving inclusivity.
In our continuous endeavour to bridge the divide, initiatives have been put in place to support the learning and developmental needs of individuals with special needs.
On 3 April 2023, all polytechnics and Institute of Technical Education (ITE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with non-profit organisation, TomoWork SG, to deliver impactful programmes for students and graduates with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
The signing was witnessed by Guest-of-Honour, Ms Gan Siow Huang, Minister of State for Education and Manpower and Mr Joel Leong, Board Chairman of TomoWork Ltd.
The collaboration aims to provide career training and opportunities for young aspiring students who are interested in roles that are in demand upon graduation.
“This MOU reinforces our commitment to create a more caring and inclusive society that enables every person to fulfil their potential,” Ms Jeanne Liew, Principal & CEO of RP, commented.
Making a Difference Through the Talent Accelerator Programme
Prior to this MOU, initiatives were already underway to support students with SEN in their transition from school to work. For instance, the Talent Accelerator Programme (TAP), now in its third year, prepares students with SEN for working life through a 12-week preparatory experience.
During this year’s TAP, leading companies such as Bloomberg, EVCo, foodpanda, Google, LinkedIn, Micron Technology, MSD, Singlife, and Standard Chartered, among others, were on board to support learning from the industry and the acceleration of career preparation opportunities for students with SEN. Their participation also enabled TAP students to gain exposure to insightful corporate projects and problem solve their own solutions.
Demo Day Hosted at RP for the First Time
At the end of the TAP, students presented their project solutions on Demo Day, which was held in RP on 30 May 2023. The event also showcased innovative ways to leverage technology, including a gamification tool to improve health financial, literacy and a user interface to improve 3D printing efficiency.
