RP School of Applied Science (SAS) collaborated with a leading automotive surface protection solutions provider to co-develop an advanced polymeric nanocomposite coating designed to significantly enhance automotive paintwork performance.
Automotive coatings in the market today commonly rely on ceramic-based formulations to improve gloss and protect paint from environmental degradation. However, such coatings are often insulative and susceptible to water spotting, resulting in increased attraction of dust and dirt. Recognising this industry-wide challenge, RP and the industry partner embarked on a joint research effort to develop a next-generation coating that addresses dirt pick-up while retaining excellent aesthetic and protective qualities.
The newly developed coating delivers a suite of improved functionalities:
Superior Dirt Pick-Up Resistance
Water-Repellent Behaviour
Improved Durability
Preservation of Aesthetic Quality
Such advancements also present opportunities for wider application beyond the automotive sector, including photovoltaics, building and construction materials, where dust mitigation is equally critical. The technology has been successfully licensed to our industry partner, who has leveraged it to achieve significant commercial success. This collaboration highlights the value of industry–institution partnerships in accelerating technology development and strengthening Singapore’s applied innovation ecosystem.
