The race is on to find viable alternatives to managing Singapore’s annual 500,000 tonnes of incineration bottom ash (IBA) in the soon-full Semakau landfill. RP has a cost-effective proposal for the burnt remains of municipal solid waste—one which has garnered both a Gold MOE Innergy Award (2018) and an MOE Innergy (2019) Outstanding Innovator Award. It is also RP’s first project to receive over a million dollars’ worth of funding ($1.2M). Under the National Environment Agency’s Closing the Waste Loop research and development initiative, RP would work with NEA’s partner company EnGro by using their specialty materials to formulate a solution which ensures that the heavy metals found in IBA is mitigated to levels complying with NEA’s requirements. The treatment solution concocted at low temperatures and without toxic chemicals spells an economical and environment-friendly solution that is both scalable and sustainable, with high potential applications for the secondary material formed. Already, experiments are underway to fine tune the treatment process for the subsequent use of the secondary material in ready-mix concrete as the immediate application, followed by other applications acceptable by the relevant authorities in due course.
