Diabetes remains a major healthcare challenge worldwide, with complications such as Diabetic Foot Ulcers (DFU) leading to reduced mobility, diminished quality of life, and even amputations.
Recognising the urgent need for better preventive care, Republic Polytechnic’s School of Infocomm (SOI) launched the Foot-At-Risk project, in partnership with a HealthTech startup and supported by data contributions from a non-profit organisation. This collaboration culminated in the development of FootScanAI, an innovative AI-powered foot scanning tool designed to transform diabetic foot care.
FootScanAI leverages computer vision and an AI model tailored to the Southeast Asian population, enabling early detection of pre-ulceration signs in diabetic feet. Unlike traditional podiatry assessments that require in-person visits, FootScanAI empowers first-level care providers and patients with remote, real-time screening while ensuring data privacy through on-device AI inference.
The collaboration between RP and its industry partners demonstrates how applied research can drive impactful healthcare solutions. With strong commercial potential across hospitals, clinics, medical device manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, and insurers, FootScanAI is set to transform diabetic foot care and improve patient outcomes.
