Student Visa Requirements

Student Visa Requirements

All international students must apply for a Student’s Pass to pursue full-time studies in Singapore, including students progressing from local secondary schools.

The only exception is for holders of valid Dependant's Pass*, Long-Term Visit Pass or Immigration Exemption Order. They are not required to apply for a Student's Pass and may pursue full-time studies within the duration of their existing pass. If the existing pass expires or is cancelled during their studies, the student will need to apply for a Student's Pass to continue his/her studies, subject to the prevailing Student's Pass eligibility criteria.

Once you’ve received your letter of offer from us, you’ll need to submit an online application here for an In-Principle Approval letter for your Student’s Pass.

You are required to complete your ICA Student's Pass formalities and receive your digital Student's Pass before the start of term. Please refer to our Student’s Pass Application email sent to you for the Step-by-Step instructions.

*Note to Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP) and Dependant’s Pass (DP) holders:

1) Students on valid Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP) and Dependant’s Pass (DP) will need to obtain a separate Letter of Consent (LOC) from Ministry of Manpower (MOM) before commencing internship. The processing time takes at least 4 weeks. If there is a change to the internship company, a new LOC needs to be obtained before the commencement of internship with the new company. Students on LTVP and DP Pass will not be able to engage in work beyond course requirement (including additional internship that is not part of the course requirement).

2) Alternatively, all non -STP holders are strongly encouraged to apply for ICA Student's Pass at the point of your enrolment for which LOC from MOM is not required for internship.

Appointment of a Local Emergency Contact

Appointment of a Local Emergency Contact

If you do not have a parent or guardian who resides in Singapore, you are required to appoint a local emergency contact who will be the point of contact in case of emergencies.

This is because as an RP student, you may need medical attention and may be unable to give or refuse consent to the procedure or treatment. In such an event, surgeons or consultants in Singapore hospitals would need a local emergency contact to be present at the hospital to authorise or refuse consent to the medical procedures or treatment on your behalf. This contact should be informed of his/her role and be contactable by you and/or RP when required.

Only when the local emergency contact is not contactable after reasonable efforts have been made, RP, its officers, staff or any authorised personnel will authorise or refuse consent to the surgery or other medical procedure or treatment.

The local emergency contact will also be the Next-of-Kin to sign on your consent forms (if you are below the age of 21) or acknowledgement forms (for students about the age of 21) for your Learning Journeys or Student Overseas Trips.

Accommodation

Accommodation

There are online websites advertising room or house rentals in Singapore. Accommodation costs vary by geographical area, accommodation type, size, demand, and the number of people sharing a room.

The earlier you begin your search, the greater your chances of finding a place that meets your needs and budget. Students are expected to pay at least one month advance rent and one month deposit.

You are strongly encouraged to secure your own accommodation before you arrive in Singapore. Most international students stay in HDB flats in view of their relative affordability. They usually rent rooms from the owners of HDB flats.

International Students can apply for accommodation at Campus Heights (subject to availability). You may e-mail help-hostel@rp.edu.sg for more information.

Getting About

Getting About

Getting around Singapore is convenient. Our well-connected public transport system of MRT trains and public buses offer a safe and comfortable means for people to commute to school, work or play across the island. For example, a train ride from Woodlands North Station to Orchard Road takes only 35 minutes.

As a full-time diploma student, you are eligible to apply for the Diploma Student Concession Card. With this card, you can enjoy discounted student fares and can opt to purchase a Monthly Concession Pass (MCP) for unlimited travel on train and bus services. Cards can be topped up at any MRT station or bus interchange. For more details, visit the SimplyGo website.

For new Year 1 students, the application process for this card begins after RP’s enrolment exercise. You can learn more about the application process here.

Managing Your Finances

Managing Your Finances

Once you have settled down in Singapore, you should consider opening a savings or checking account with a local or international bank. Some of the major banks in Singapore are:

You can visit the websites of these banks to find out more about starting an account with them. When you open a bank account, the bank will issue you an ATM (Automated Teller Machine) card which gives you the convenience of withdrawing money from any ATM machine operated by your bank (there are ATM machines from POSB / DBS and OCBC on RP campus).

With your bank account in Singapore, money can be transferred electronically from an overseas bank to your Singapore bank for a certain fee. You may want to make enquiries concerning such services at the banks in your own country.

Note: For better security purposes, do deposit your cash into Banks, such as POSB, DBS and OCBC etc. Do not leave your money with others.

Insurance

Insurance

As an RP full-time international student, you are covered under the Group Hospitalisation & Surgical Insurance with Mental Health Rider (GHSI). This covers treatment for the following conditions at a Singapore Government/Restructured Hospital/Specialist Outpatient Clinic/A&E:

  • bodily injury and sickness including mental illness

  • communicable diseases (requiring isolation and/or quarantine by law such as SARS, bird flu)

  • other infectious diseases
  • If you have more queries, contact us at help-international@rp.edu.sg.

You may apply for a Letter of Guarantee (LOG) for hospitalisation treatment in Singapore. A LOG is a document issued by the insurer for hospitalisation and/or surgery. With a LOG, the hospital will waive the cash deposit and payment of the hospital bill up to the limits of the insurance and subject to the policy terms and conditions. The hospital will bill the insurer directly. You can find out more about this insurance scheme in our students’ insurance scheme webpage.
