This module enables students to develop a good understanding of chemical principles that apply to fields such as materials science, pharmaceutical sciences and environmental science. Students will learn to appreciate how the sub-microscopic properties of atoms and molecules affect the macroscopic properties of matter; understand the basis and relevance of chemical reactions and mechanisms; and appreciate the concepts involved in chemical reactions such as equilibrium, thermodynamics and kinetics. Topics covered include stereochemistry and colligative properties of chemical compounds, transition metal chemistry, phase diagrams, spontaneity of chemical reactions and chemical kinetics, as well as aspects of organic chemistry such as electrophilic addition, nucleophilic substitution and free radical reactions.
