This module focuses on the concept of genes as the molecule of heredity and DNA as the genetic material. It introduces the following basic concepts in this extremely broad subject: chromosome organisation, germline and somatic cell DNA transmission, Mendelian inheritance and phenotypic expression of genes, breeding and genetic crossing, and heritable genetic disorders and their implications. The main learning objectives of this module are to allow students to (1) show an appreciation for genetic inheritance and transmission; (2) understand the mechanisms behind genetic transmission and variability; and (3) be able to relate genetic defects to common genetic disorders and birth abnormalities.
