This module aims to highlight the use of biological compounds for disease diagnostics and treatment. Students will gain hands-on experience in stem cell culture and learn how cell reprogramming and bioprinting are carried out in the field of regenerative medicine. Integrating knowledge in recombinant DNA technology, students will learn to design genes to produce proteins and enzymes that can be used for disease detection and medical therapy. In addition, interactions between viruses and host will be examined for better understanding of anti-viral drug therapy, vaccine development and drug delivery. Concepts on precision medicine, an approach that customises treatment and prevention strategies, will be introduced in this module. This includes predictive diagnostic tools and ethical considerations in precision medicine research.
