This module covers the key concepts of engineering materials, in appreciating its molecular structure, characteristics, and properties. A qualitative approach is used to develop the understanding on strength of materials, failure mode, processing and appropriate usage of metals in targeted applications. This module covers topics such as ferrous and non-ferrous materials, non-metallic structures, semiconductors, ceramics and failure mechanisms such as fatigue and corrosion. Other topics covered include the testing of defects in structures. The curriculum is designed to help students understand the elements, properties and construct of various materials and their characteristics. Students can then relate the characteristics to the failure mechanisms which will aid them when selecting a suitable material for engineering use
