This module introduces students to the fundamental concepts of engineering materials. They will be equipped with a robust understanding of the characteristics, behaviours and processing techniques of different engineering materials used in real-world engineering contexts. In addition, they will learn topics covering the properties and applications of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, composites and non-metallic materials. Students will also gain insights into material degradation such as corrosion and fatigue, and the methodologies employed in failure investigation. This will enable them to explore diverse treatment processes and manufacturing methods applicable to these materials.
