This module aims to introduce students to key concepts and principles that governed sports promotion and development. Elite performance, community participation and sports industry development are the key pillars of sport policies in many countries. Most governments accord sport a high status in central administration and spend considerable sums of public money on its development. This module examines the process by which sport policy is made, and explores the administrative framework for its delivery, implementation and monitoring, focusing on the respective responsibilities and effectiveness of governments and national sports associations. The module explores the division of responsibility between different sporting authorities, and how the relationships are managed. The module also provides an analysis of the policy-making process for important contemporary issues, evaluates policies effectiveness, and the extent to which they achieve intended outcomes.
