This module aims to prepare students to perform the various functions of a healthcare front counter and back-end operations. Students will be introduced to Singapore’s healthcare financing philosophy and a mixed financing system consisting of subsidies, MediSave, MediShield Life (and other insurance) and MediFund. Students will acquire knowledge of the various sources of healthcare financing for the patients, means testing, government funding for healthcare institutions, types of healthcare billing, mode of claims and payment collection. Students will also acquire practical skills on how to perform financial counselling and how to improve the patient revenue cycle to maximise collection and minimise debts. Students will also learn about fixed and variable costs in the costing of services, capital and operating expenditure in the budgeting process and the monitoring of expenditure vis-à-vis budget.
