Alumni

Alumni

In June 2017, SSH alumna Samantha Ashwini Singham graduated with First Class Honours from Durham University, one of the United Kingdom’s leading sports universities.

The Diploma in Sports and Exercise Sciences graduate also topped her cohort for her BA (Hons) Sport, Exercise and Physical Activity.

Samantha was similarly her cohort’s Valedictorian when she graduated from SSH in 2014.

Enthusing about her poly days, Samantha shared how RP’s Problem-based Learning (PBL) pedagogy equipped her with the essential study skills she needed at university, like public speaking and critical thinking.

“Thanks to PBL, I was able to prepare and deliver engaging and effective presentations at uni and excel at public speaking,” she said. “I was confident and comfortable when I had to deliver a presentation for my team for one of my uni modules.

“It also helped me to become more intellectually curious, and taught me how to ask the right questions about things that intrigue me or I am unsure about at uni.”

Staff

Staff

A team of RP lecturers received a research grant from the Ministry of Health to build a motorised housekeeping cart that is set to revolutionise the local hotel industry.

SSH lecturers Dr Alex Ong, Dr Jernice Tan and Mr Michael Loke are part of this interdisciplinary team, planning to mechanise the existing cart so that it can be manoeuvred electronically by housekeeping staff workers with just a push of a button.

The device will significantly lighten the workload for the staff and minimise injuries such as lower back pain.

“We want to make sure that it is as cost-effective as possible for hotels so that they see the value of buying it and using it,” said Michael.

This invention will make housekeeping easier and more efficient. More people would be incentivised to join the local hotel sector and older housekeepers would be encouraged to stay on longer.
