Helping seniors from Sunlove Active Ageing Centre get active and water-confident!

SLP

A team of Diploma in Outdoor Education (DOE) lecturers and students helped 30 seniors from Sunlove Active Ageing Centre to try out outdoor activities at our RP Pool in August 2025. This service learning initiative was called 'Seniors Making Waves'. Its aim was to get the seniors to get active and improve their water confidence through mass aquatic exercises and kayaking sessions.

DOE student volunteer, Joshua Tan shared, "This has also been a great learning experience — using my outdoor skills to encourage the seniors to try things outside of their comfort zone.”

Introducing modified sports and games to elderly participants

SLP

In July 2025, our Diploma in Sport Coaching (DSC) students got busy conducting Learn-to-Play Sports Workshops for seniors via modified sports and Zumba sessions customised to their ability levels. The workshops gave our students a chance to mobilise their training from their ‘Inclusive Physical Activity’ and ‘Instructional Strategies for Sports and Games’ modules.

DSC student, Muhammad Yasir Yuuta shared, “Despite their initial hesitation, the seniors gained confidence, tried out new sports, and stayed active. Seeing their smiles and gratitude at the end of the day made the experience truly rewarding!”

SSH students help SOS athletes navigate the XLC experience

SLP

24 RP students, mainly SSH, volunteered alongside athletes from Special Olympics Singapore (SOS) as they tackled challenge ropes courses and climbing walls at RP's Xperiential Learning Centre (XLC)! The athletes showed so much grit and resilience. This was truly a celebration of inclusion and the power of community.

SSH student volunteer, Shantell Marsall, shared, “We went there to help the special athletes, but we ended up learning so much more from them. Their courage and joy were so contagious.”
