Industry leaders, passionate farmers, researchers and innovators converged at Republic Polytechnic for the Agrifood Research and Innovation Showcase (ARIS) themed "Bio-based Solutions for Sustainable Agriculture". The gathering at ARIS, hosted by Urban Agriculture Centre of Innovation (UACOI) wasn't just about discussing challenges; it was about showcasing tangible, nature-inspired solutions designed to meet our drive towards sustainable urban farming – one that prioritises both productivity and environmental health.
The true value in scientific research lies in practical application. This is where "The Productive Farmer: Tools, Tips and Techniques" session in the ARIS proved invaluable. This segment was tailor-made for those on the front lines of food production – the farmers themselves. 4 experts were invited to share best practices in comprehensive pest and disease management, equipping farmers with strategies that are both effective and environmentally friendly. A particularly insightful presentation centred on tackling the notorious Diamondback Moth in leafy vegetable cultivation. This common pest can devastate crops, and learning sustainable, bio-based methods to control it offered immediate, actionable takeaways for attendees. Attendees also had the opportunity to hear from Singapore Agrotechnologies and Koppert on the applications of their products on the field, providing everyone a glimpse of the potential for sustainable agriculture.
ARIS’s attendees were also treated to a rare view into the cutting-edge of agricultural technology in the session – “Biobased Research Innovations”. Innovators and researchers shared their groundbreaking work on developing bio-based products – everything from novel fertilisers using insect frass and biostimulants to natural pest control agents and seed treatment methods.
Beyond the presentations, one of the most dynamic and impactful components of the event was the "Ask the Expert" session. This unique opportunity allowed participants to engage in one-to-one personalised discussions with leading agricultural specialists. This dedicated session fostered a powerful sense of collaboration and problem-solving, ensuring concerted effort in exploration and follow-up with new ideas and industry challenges. It underscored the event's commitment to not just presenting information, but to actively empowering the agricultural community.
