The latest Agrifood Research and Innovation Showcase, which was successfully concluded on 4 April 2025, has brought together farming practitioners, energy resource experts, and government agencies under the theme “Harvesting Efficiency: Sustainable Energy Practices for Urban Farms.”
This session highlighted the importance of reducing the cost of electricity in farm operations in urban agriculture and spotlighted many good strategies and best practices for urban farms in managing energy usage in their crop production. Plant scientists from Republic Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic shared how light spectrum and recipe selection, photoperiod optimisation, as well as smart lighting control can help farms maximise crop production yield while lowering electricity costs. Enceres Pte Ltd presented their innovative Spectral CellTM technology that has the potential to generate solar power while maximising the right light spectrum for plant growth.
Energy Efficiency Technology Centre (EETC) also provided the audience the systematic approach to energy resource management in farm operations and examples of how small changes in farm infrastructure can go a long way to saving electricity usage. Finally, the Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) presented the relevant grants which SMEs and Startups can leverage to improve farm efficiency and decrease operation costs.
Besides having insightful presentations, the participants had networking opportunities to foster collaboration across sectors. The event once again reinforced the importance of knowledge-sharing in advancing sustainable agriculture in urban environments.
Stay tuned for announcements about our next session!
