Built Environment Innovation Exchange & Agrifood Research and Innovation Showcase (BEIX & ARIS) - 2 October 2024

  • Special thanks to our organisers and guest speakers for BEIX & ARIS event!

  • Prof. Kua Harn Wei from National University of Singapore sharing his experience on developing innovative Biochar as a sustainable building material.

  • A presentation on the development and use of biochar in the agriculture sector by Emeritus Prof. Ong Choon Nam from National University of Singapore

  • Mr. Randy Toh, Vice President of Bluefield Renewable Energy sharing his insights of biochar application for commercial business.

  • Scientists from Urban Agriculture Centre of Innovation sharing the results of applying biochar to leafy greens cultivation.

Biochar, a carbon-rich by-product of biomass, has been gaining attention in the construction and agriculture industries. Due to its ability to sequester carbon, it has been increasingly discussed and explored as a green building material and sustainable booster for crop cultivation. Such application of advanced materials can contribute towards a greener and more sustainable construction and agriculture industry.

We were thrilled to co-organise the Built Environment Innovation Exchange (BEIX) x Agrifood Research Innovation Showcase (ARIS) with Building and Construction Authority (BCA), an event that was as inspiring as it was insightful, co-host between the Centre of Innovation for Built Environment – Advanced Materials (COIBE-AM) and Urban Agriculture Centre of Innovation (UACOI).

Speakers include Emeritus Professor Prof Ong Choon Nam and Associate Professor Kua Karn Wei from the National University of Singapore (NUS); Mr Randy Toh, Vice President of Bluefield Renewable Energy; Mr Eric Teo, CEO of Gee Hoe Seng; Dr Goh Chee Keong from Republic Polytechnic. They shared interesting topics on:

  • The use of biochar as a sustainable building material
  • Biochar: An emerging technology for sustainable crop production
  • Incorporating biochar into mortar as a replacement for cement to reduce carbon emissions for building and construction
  • Applications of biochar in construction from a commercial perspective
  • Code of Practice for producing and applying biochar

Our heartfelt thanks to the presenters for sharing their insights and expertise in biochar development, production and application, and showcasing their innovative biochar products to the event participants! A big thank you to all attendees, including industry leaders and partners, for your enthusiasm and engagement. The possibilities energise us as we continue working together to pioneer innovative, greener solutions for the built environment and agri-food sectors.
