Kayak Clean-Up Adventure

On 25 June 2025, 25 students from Republic Polytechnic’s School of Sports and Health (SSH) embarked on a kayak-based marine clean-up at Marina Bay (Kallang Basin) as part of an experiential learning and community service project. This student-led initiative focused on environmental sustainability and student engagement.

Before the event day, students conducted a pre-event site reconnaissance to assess water conditions and identify areas with concentrated litter. They also collaborated with the Singapore Canoe Federation (SCF) to plan safety procedures and kayak deployment.

During the event, students actively participated in a kayak clean-up project at Marina Bay, showcasing their skills at every stage. They demonstrated strong leadership and teamwork during the planning and on-water coordination. Over the three-hour event, they navigated the waters, collected marine litter, and ultimately helped contribute to environmental awareness.

To solidify their learning, the students held a post-event reflection and sharing session:

One student shared, “Every piece of litter we remove from the water is one less threat to marine wildlife. Animals often mistake plastic for food, which can be deadly. This clean-up isn’t just about beautifying our waterways - it’s about giving wildlife a better chance to survive.”

Another said, “This experience reminded me that taking care of the environment starts with each of us. It’s not just about joining clean-ups - it’s about making conscious choices daily, like not littering and being more responsible with our waste.”
