RP DEAFining on a Beach Clean-Up with RWS and TOUCH
Sign, Collect, Connect: Building a Cleaner Community!
On 28 Sep 2024, over 40 people from RP Deafining, RWS S.E.A. Aquarium and TOUCH Silent Club came together to do a beach clean-up at Coney Island. The day began with some icebreakers and a basic sign language lesson from RP Deafining, followed by a briefing from RWS on their conservation efforts and their impact. Together, we travelled to Coney Island to do the beach clean-up and picked up 163kg of litter which included a large tyre, traffic cone and large rope. Everyone was grouped up so that each group had 1 RWS staff, 1 RP Deafining IG student, and a TOUCH participant. The Deafining students used sign language to engage with the TOUCH clients, serving as a bridge between the RWS staff and the TOUCH community. By the end of the day, everyone felt very happy with the event, and the participants had grown closer together.
