On 18 December 2024, RP Diploma in Sports Coaching students from two FYP teams organised the GOLD Sports Carnival, an event aimed at promoting active aging and meaningful engagement. The event brought together 30 elderly participants from Marsiling and Golden Saffron Active Ageing Centres, creating a joyful and inclusive experience for all involved.
The students utilised skills and knowledge gained from various modules such as S202 Inclusive Physical Activity, S207 Biopsychosocial Aspects of Ageing, S208 Physical Activities for Youth and Adults, S212 Sports and Exercise Prescription, S263 Instructional Strategies for Sports and Games, and the S935 Industry Immersion Programme. They dedicated the past month to planning, coaching, and inspiring the elderly to embrace active lifestyles. Their mission was to foster inclusivity, boost confidence, and demonstrate that age is no barrier to living an active life.
During the carnival, participants engaged in a variety of fun and inclusive games, designed to improve self-esteem, motivation, and physical well-being. The event was rooted in Self-Determination Theory, which helped guide the students in creating activities that promoted autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Regardless of age or physical condition, every participant experienced the joy of movement and the satisfaction of achieving personal goals.
The feedback from both participants and community partners underscored the event's success. One community partner remarked, “This carnival has brought a new energy to our seniors, inspiring them to stay active and connected to their community. We’re thrilled to see the impact this event has had on their motivation.” A student added, “It was incredibly fulfilling to witness the seniors enjoying themselves and realising that physical activity can be a source of fun and empowerment, no matter their age.” Similarly, a beneficiary expressed, “I feel so much better after today. It’s nice to know that there are activities that can keep us fit and connected, even at our age.” Together, these reflections highlight the positive influence the event had on everyone involved.
The event had a profound impact on both the 30 elderly participants and the students involved. Through their efforts, the students not only applied what they had learned in their coursework but also made a lasting difference in the lives of the seniors, igniting a desire for continued physical activity and community engagement.
