Outdoor Leadership Series: Kayak 3-Star Course

Kayaking is a popular outdoor activity in Singapore, and it is also often part of outdoor learning programmes. As a job requirement in most outdoor education organisations, the educator is required to have 3-Star certification and kayak coaching level 1 to supervise kayaking activities and to conduct kayak proficiency certifications.

This course introduces skills, concepts, and principles of advanced kayaking skills. Topics include fleet management, kayak roll and 3-star skills under the Singapore Canoe Federation syllabus.   The emphasis is on acquiring skills to participate safely and competently in kayaking activities, primarily in local, coastal, and tropical contexts.  

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, the participants* should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate competency in executing the kayak 3-star skills;
  2. Demonstrate fleet management skills required for a kayak expedition journey;
  3. Apply risk assessment when planning and executing a kayaking expedition; 
  4. Plan and execute an 8-km coastal paddling journey.

*Participants should have at least kayak 2-star certification

Programme Outline

The mode of learning for this workshop is interactive and hands-on. The training methods include experiential learning, discussions, practices, and peer-supported activities.

Public: Outdoor educators and kayaking instructors, who are seeking to deepen their technical skillsets 

Entry Requirement

  • SCF 2 Star Certification holder.  

Certification

Participants will be awarded the Certificate of Attendance issued by Republic Polytechnic upon meeting 75% of attendance requirement.
