RP’s Health and Wellness Cluster aims to develop technologies, solutions, and programmes that help in environmental control, improve population health, enhance quality of life, and digitalise healthcare. We collaborate with industry partners in the health, wellness, engineering, and IT sectors to create relevant and meaningful projects that will have a positive impact on our community. These projects generally focus on three focus areas: Pandemic and Environmental Control, Preventive and Community Health, and Digital Health.
Covid-19 has changed our lives dramatically and it has become crucial for us to employ the latest innovations in dealing with pandemics. Technologies such as Ultraviolet C (UV-C) disinfection, autonomous robots, and air ventilation techniques will go a long way in helping us to live in the new normal.
The Covid-19 pandemic has forced medical institutions to review its workflow with regards to infection control. This includes the thorough disinfecting of reusable Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), as well as common medical tools and instruments. The UV-C Sanitisation Enclosure developed by RP is an ideal solution towards meeting this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
The Dilution Air Processing Unit (DAPU) is an ideal solution for businesses to thrive in the Covid-19 new normal. It allows the creation of ‘clean’ zones (e.g. sickbays, waiting rooms, etc.) which prevents cross contamination. This solution is suitable for hotels and other premises to be used for quarantine purposes.
In response to Singapore’s growing health needs, we innovate cost-effective and evidence-based solutions for the community within the preventive health space. This is achieved through a process of ecologically-validated research and customised lesson design approaches to meet the varying needs of the community.
RP has successfully developed intellectual property licenses for algorithms (algos) to measure various physiological parameters (e.g. SpO2, glucose, etc) to be derived for wearables. These algos are empirically-validated with human trials and are not hardware-dependent. They can be potentially calibrated to adapt to any wearable such as wrist-worn smart watches to facilitate non-invasive community and preventive health monitoring.
RP has successfully developed a process for customising a seat that facilitates healthy sitting posture through the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (NAMIC) Grant. The seat has been validated empirically with human trials and can be customised within 24 hours with affordable delivery.
The iPLAY framework, a winner of the MOE Innergy Award 2020 (Silver), is a turnkey solution that uses an exergaming platform to assist educators and therapists in assessing motor skills, tracking motor milestones, and providing motor intervention. Digitalised information collected from iPLAY can be interpreted with empirical-based algorithm to monitor and improve gross motor proficiencies of pre-schoolers with customised iPLAY interactive games. Such a contemporary intervention approach with automated data tracking and interpretation is currently not available in the early childhood and special needs settings.
The use of digital tools can revolutionise how people access services to manage their health and well-being. Using computing platforms, software, network connectivity, and sensors, RP aims to develop a wide range of health and wellness applications for wearable devices, mobile health, telehealth, personalised medicine, and health information technology.
Diabetes mellitus, commonly referred to as diabetes, is a long-term illness characterised by high sugar levels in the blood. This project’s objective was to build an application using the Internet of Things with DLP® NIRscan™ Nano Evaluation Module to detect and make non-invasive scans for diseases like diabetes and acidosis. It is jointly developed by Republic Polytechnic and Japan’s National Institute of Technology, Nagano College.
RP has developed a low-cost multilingual speech-to-text (S2T) transcription and translation software to facilitate enhanced communication for the deaf community and hearing-impaired elderly. It is created with a localised context that incorporates different languages and accents in the Asia-Pacific region.
Through the TOTE SIR Grant and collaboration with the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), RP developed an app that helps users to manage mental well-being through self-monitoring and self-care coping skills prompts. It also alerts the social care support members to check in when the users report extreme changes in mood, appetite, energy level, and sleep pattern.
