FEBRUARY 2023 — Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has said that ASEAN will become the world’s fourth largest economy by 2030. As the region makes its way towards this milestone, opportunities abound for internships, business endeavours and partnerships.

The Singapore Government consistently encourages enterprising Singaporeans to venture into the region to help grow Singapore’s economic ‘hinterland’, given the city state’s small size.

A Southeast Asian neighbour that offers great potential for such opportunities is Vietnam, with whom Singapore recently marked 50 years of diplomatic relations.

Building Regional Ties in Outdoor and Adventure Learning

Riding on this wave of new opportunities and with the Singapore Government’s encouragement in mind, RP cemented a partnership with Outward Bound Vietnam (OBV) with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in February 2023.

OBV was established in 2016 and is part of Outward Bound International, a network of outdoor and adventure education centres which operates in 35 countries. OBV has a sister organisation in Outward Bound Singapore.

The MOU significantly expands on a successful relationship that began in 2017, with OBV hosting activities including student internships, Student Overseas Trips (SOTs) and staff training.

Our students have benefitted greatly from this partnership and derive valuable experience from their time in Vietnam. One student who interned at OBV shared that she thoroughly enjoyed the learning and work opportunities; from administration, accounting and course documentation work to supporting, coordinating and planning outdoor programmes.

Mr Nguyen Tung Linh, Acting Director of OBV also expressed his excitement for the partnership: “This MOU opens a new chapter for our long-term partnership as OBV looks forward to welcoming more RP students and staff to our basecamps in Ha Long and Quy Nhon.”.

Greater Opportunities and New Horizons for Exploration

The MOU will enable students of RP School of Sports, Health and Leisure (SHL) to access expanded learning opportunities overseas through internships, trips and projects. For instance, our students from RP’s Diploma in Outdoor & Adventure Learning (DOAL) have benefitted from OBV’s generosity in the areas of academic donations, scholarships and trip support.

“We are privileged to work closely with OBV, an organisation which shares many ideals with us and has been a strong supporter of our students’ development,” said Ms Tan Ai Chin, Programme Chair of RP’s DOAL. She looks forward to re-engaging OBV with discussions and ongoing programmes that have been put on hold by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Industry partners will also gain greater access to regional consulting opportunities within the field of outdoor and adventure learning. This MOU builds on similar partnerships that RP has with other Outward Bound centres in Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong, enhancing RP’s reach across Asia.

Supporting the Nation’s Growth Through Industry Partnerships

The MOU with OBV connects RP SHL students and staff to exciting and yet-to-be discovered opportunities within the region. There is much that RP can contribute – such as developing future infrastructure and professionals within sectors such as sports and outdoor learning, as well as health and wellness.

Growth in such collaborations can herald benefits to Singapore. For example, a government study looking into Singapore’s rapidly ageing population revealed that access to preventive care and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle were key areas requiring attention and action. The September 2022 Healthier SG White Paper has outlined how change is necessary, and this is where RP’s MOU with OBV can bear meaningful fruit.

RP continues to seek out and partner key Southeast Asian industry players from various fields for the benefit of our students, partners, and Singapore as a whole.
