Five students from Diploma in Mass Communication (DMC) won the Merit award for their video submission to the Student category of the Singapore Heritage Short Film Competition 2018 organised by the Singapore Film Society.

Entitled "Mr. Mokhtar's Kuih Warisan Melayu", revolves around a small HDB shop in Bedok Reservoir where Mr Mokhtar’s “Kuih Warisan Melayu” storefront sells delicacies that hold stories worth generations. The heartwarming tale and strong storytelling left a deep impression in Mr Yee Chang Kang's mind, one of the judges of the competition and Film Director of Shooting Gallery Asia, as he commented the team in his speech.

This project was the brainchild of five DMC Year 2 and Year 3 students, Mira Purnamasari Bte Ansari, Clarabelle Tan Hui Yi, Issac Thiang Dao Jun, Darius Boey Jun, Muhammad Rauf Khan Bin Abdul R K, under the supervision by DMC Lecturers, Ms Fashela Jalilanee and Mr Chan Wai Hoe.

The Singapore Heritage Short Film Competition was conceptualised in 2014 with the aim to nurture audiences and filmmakers to take interest in our cultural heritage and documenting them for the future generations on film. Over the years, the Singapore Film Society has collected numerous entries, from film-making students to  novices, across all Singaporean cultures, locations and languages. The films have been publicly screened in libraries, galleries, community clubs, and campuses.  The films have also been screened across Malaysia (Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Johore Bahru and Ipoh) and Japan.

Now into its fifth year, the competition is organised by the Singapore Film Society, and supported by the National Heritage Board, Chinese Language and Cultural Fund of the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations, and Hong Leong Foundation. The theme for the 2018 edition is Heritage Food. This year’s travelling showcase comprises of the eight short films that make up this year’s winners; and it would be coming to RP on 29 October 2018, from 430pm to 6pm, at LR-E4.

The students’ video will also be screened in Macau in October along with the other seven finalist videos as well!
