Students from the School of Management and Communication (SMC) secured first place in the gold category at the SUSS Analytics and Visualisation Challenge 2023 which was held in October. In addition to winning the top prize of $800, the students received provisional offers of admission into the full-time Bachelor of Science in Business Analytics programme by Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS).

The champions, Team Dumpling Dubs 2.0 consisted of second-year students from the Diploma in Consumer Behaviour & Research (DCBR):

  • Keefe Lim Weirong (Team leader)
  • Stefan Ee Shane Yau
  • Safin Khan

The students underwent a one-day Tableau training by SUSS, after which they had a week to: 1) Decide on an engaging topic surrounding public housing in Singapore; 2) Analyse datasets for insights; 3) Design an interactive dashboard using data storytelling and visualisation techniques; and 4) Present their interactive dashboard via zoom.

Team Dumpling Dubs, 2.0’s submission analysed the housing preferences for singles in Singapore, aligning with current demographic trends. Among their findings were singles’ preference on the type of flats and estates to live in. They also explored the value appreciation of flats and their feasibility for long-term investments. Geospatial data was also studied, revealing a correlation between the proximity of amenities and flat prices.

Another team of second-year students, also from DCBR, won the silver award and a prize of $500. Team Woodlands North Legends comprised:

  • Racheal Lee Hui Shi (Leader)
  • Siti Nur Afiqah Binte Abdul Ghani
  • Goh Jun Hui

The SUSS Analytics and Visualisation Challenge 2023 was open to A-Level, International Baccalaureate, and polytechnic students. Our winning teams competed against more than 25 teams from various institutions. They were mentored by senior lecturer (industry), Dr Ng Foo Meng.

SMC students previously secured second place in the competition’s 2021 and 2022 runs.
