A team of Diploma in Consumer Behaviour & Research (DCBR) students won second place at the SUSS Analytics & Visualisation Challenge 2022, which was held online in September. Team Barry “THE BEE” Benson, was made up of four final year students:

  • Megan Tham Mae Yee

  • Ng Weilin

  • Nur Nabilah Wafa’ Asfee

  • Ng Kok Zun, Brent

The theme for the competition was “All Things Singapore”. Participants were required to curate relevant datasets and perform data analytics to cover an interesting side of Singapore – ranging from health to education, and social-economics. They then had to summarise the analytical insights into a poster using data storytelling and visualisation techniques.

Team Barry “THE BEE” Benson’s submission focused on how to choose affordable resale flats. By looking at data, they analysed various key considerations one should take note of when looking to make a purchase. Through the analysis outcome, the team provided a set of recommendations to help choose suitable resale flats according to budget.

Another team of final year students, Food 4lyfe, also from DCBR, won the merit award and qualified as one of the top 12 out of 40 submissions. The team consisted of:

  • Ng Jun Kiat

  • Tan Yang Lik

  • Gabrielle Damara Huang Xuan

  • Resabel Evangelyn David

At the School of Management and Communication (SMC), students are trained on industry best practices in data analytics and visualisation. They are equipped with the capabilities to extract and summarise insights from both structured and unstructured data; enabling them to communicate insights gained informatively.

With their learning background and mentorship from SMC’s senior lecturer, Dr Ng Foo Meng, our students were well-equipped for the competition. As they competed, the students were also on their internship stint – which further provided them with an added advantage as they were able to leverage their internship experiences.

Organised by the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), the competition was open to A-Level, International Baccalaureate, and Polytechnic Diploma students.
