Reinventing the Play Experience of Traditional Games

Have you ever wondered why some traditional games are still being played even though they were invented hundreds of years ago? Find out the secrets to creating a playable and fun experience in this Applied Learning Module. You will explore through hands on play with popular traditional games, and discover how game play has evolved in modern board games. Learn how to analyse games, and modify the designs of traditional games to create your very own board or card game! Gain first-hand experience on how design teams collaborate to, design, playtest and modify the game play to deliver an engaging game. Level up with this module if you will like to explore the career opportunities in the field of game design!

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

  • Describe the game rules for a traditional game

  • Identify game elements in a traditional game

  • Modify rules to change an intended play experience in a traditional game

  • Apply rapid prototyping practices to build a game system

Students will be given an opportunity to build and playtest a board game prototype and explore how to shape traditional games to appeal to modern audiences.
