User Experience Design and Physical Prototyping

Have you ever considered how everyday objects around us are designed and built? This three-day Applied Learning Module (ApLM) puts you into the role of a designer, where you will explore ideas through sketching and apply physical prototyping techniques to create a gaming mouse. You will learn the basics of User Experience Design and the science of ergonomics in an open-minded creative environment. Experience the life of a designer as you prototype your ideas, model them and present them to your friends to get feedback through feedback sessions. This module will be beneficial for you if you are considering a career in the design industry!

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

  • Describe the design research process for developing a physical prototype for a consumer electronic product
  • Apply the design process to develop a physical prototype of a familiar consumer electronic product
  • Build a basic physical prototype based on ergonomic considerations for a familiar consumer electronic product
  • Present the prototype of a familiar consumer electronic product to seek feedback on its design

Topics will be taught through a combination of mini-lectures and practical sessions. Students affirm conceptual knowledge through hands-on exercises. They will also learn teamwork through co-creation activities.

The facilitator provides feedback daily towards the end of the session and raises discussion to trigger the students to reflect upon their work for the day.
