SAS bam boots team 2020

Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow 2020 

SAS team comprising of students from the Diploma in Materials Science won 2nd prize at the Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow 2020 competition. 

The SAS Bam-Boots idea is a cost-effective, natural-looking prosthetic limb that simultaneously offers the strength and durability needed to support the users’ weight. This low-cost material also allows for more varieties of prosthetic legs. The team was inspired to work on the idea as they wanted individuals with disabilities to have hope and connect to the world.

Delightex Award

Delightex Explorer Award

SAS Diploma in Biotechnology, Eng Li Wen and Crystal Tan recently won the Delightex Explorer Award, competing against 30 teams from various tertiary institutions across Southeast Asia.

Led by Dr Heng Kiang Soon, they proposed creating a soy cream cheese soup powder packed in an edible sachet made of okara (soy residue). The sachet dissolves in hot water to become part of the soup. 

Their idea, which was among the top 4 ideas, was very well-received by the committee who felt that they achieved the aim of bringing joy to people. 


Young Marine Scientist Symposium 2019

Young Marine Scientists Symposium 2019

SAS Diploma in Marine Science and Aquaculture (DMAC) 2019 graduate, Ms Halimah Razali, won top prize at the first nation-wide marine symposium.

This is the first marine symposium and Halimah was the youngest oral presenters at the event.

Her winning entry is based on her research on “Isolation and genomic characterization of phytoplankton viruses in Singapore waters”.

MOE Excel Fest 2019

MOE ExCEL Fest 2019

SAS won 3 awards at the MOE ExCEL Fest held at Max Atria, Singapore EXPO from 28 May – 29 May. Minister for Education, Mr Ong Ye Kung was the Guest-Of-Honour at the event.  MOE ExCEL fest provides a platform to share exciting innovations and best practices from MOE Kindergartens and schools, to MOE HQ divisions and MOE statutory Board through exhibitions and sharing sessions.

The first SAS team comprising Dr Chiradip, Dr Susmita Ban and Dr Janaki Shah won the Gold Innergy Award for their project “Eco-friendly sunlight activated larvicides for control of mosquito borne diseases”.

The second SAS team comprising Dr Goh Chee Keong,  Mr Low Thong Kiang and Mr Tang Lok Hing also won the Gold Innergy Award for their project “Transforming Municipal Solid Waste Incineration (MSWI) Fly Ash Into Value Added Products”.

Dr Susmita received the Outstanding Innovator Award for her contributions to drive innovations at the workplace.



Greenwave 2019

Green Wave Environmental Care Competition 2019

Diploma in Environmental Science (DENV) Year 3 students, Esther Ng, Iska Nerimah Bte Rosman, Phobe Ngo and Gabriel Lim, won the Encouragement Award at the event, for their project titled "Turning solid waste fly ash into useful building materials".

Students received their awards during the Award Presentation Ceremony at the Marina Mandarin Hotel, Singapore on 22 May 2019 from Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Social and Family Development.

YSS 2019

Young Scientist Symposium 2019

It was a meeting of like-minded youths at the Young Scientists' Symposium 2019. The event was organised by the Singapore Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, with support from the Singapore Science Centre and NUS Department of Biochemistry, proved fruitful for our students. 

Diploma in Biomedical Science (DBMS) student, Ng Zi Xiu, walked away with the Thermo Fisher Oral Presentation Distinction Prize. Wilfred Tan Xin Wei from DBMS, Tay See Lin from Diploma in Biotechnology and Chen Yu Wei with her team from Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science all won merit prizes for their poster presentations, while DBMS student Chang Jit Yee won the Audience Clicker Prize.



Crea8 sustainability video competition

Crea8 Sustainability Video Competition 2018

Two teams from Republic Polytechnic won awards at the Crea8 Sustainability Video Competition 2018, organized by PacificLight. Republic Polytechnic students won the first prize for their project titled “The Last Straw” and also the 1st Runner up for their project titled “Your Waste Today, Another's Worry Tomorrow”.

Sharada, Janani and Rene from the Diploma in Environmental Science and Sin Ying from the Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science won The Special Award (Open category) in the Sustainable Lifestyle Challenge 2018 on 3 November with their project titled ‘The Recycling Buddies’.

Food packaging award 2018

Best Packaging Award at Food Innovation Product Award 2018

A team of students and staff from the Diploma in Biotechnology has clinched the Best Packaging Award at the Food Innovation Product Award (FIPA) 2018, organised by the Singapore Food Manufacturers' Association (SFMA). This competition aims to bring together food manufacturers and students from Institutes of Higher Learning to collaborate and create new and exciting food products. Their winning entry “Crispy Cups” was carried out in collaboration with Mr Popiah Pte Ltd.

The team received the award from Ms Sim Ann, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, who graced the Award Ceremony on 19 April 2018 at MAX Atria Singapore Expo.

Green Wave Environmental Care Competition 2018

Two student teams from the Diploma in Environmental Science (DENV) and the Diploma in Materials Science (DMTS) were presented with the Good Presenter and Encouragement awards respectively at the 2018 Sembcorp Marine’s Green Wave Environmental Competition. The Encouragement Award was for the project "Developing Oil-Sorbent Foams Based on Polyurethane - Fly Ash Composites".

Guest-of-Honour Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for Environment and Water Resources, presented the awards to the teams at a ceremony held on 2 Feb 2018.


SAS wins People's Choice Award

A team of students from the Diploma in Materials Science (DMTS) won the People’s Choice Award in the Science in Video competition organised by the Materials Research Society. The team’s video shows how a shark skin’s nanoscale structures have inspired innovations that help marine vessels move more efficiently through water.


3rd Third Dimension

Adding a Third Dimension to Success

Singapore International 3D Printing Competition is an annual event run by the Singapore Centre for 3D Printing, Nanyang Technological University, to promote awareness and adoption of 3D printing technologies.

Nine Diploma in Materials Science (DMTS) students participated in its 5th run in 2017. They submitted two artworks – titled “The Smiley Hat” and “The Biting Shark” – under the theme “Hats”, and another named “Sailing to the Sun” under the theme “Clocks”.

“The Biting Shark” was voted the unanimous winner of the Tertiary Student Category! The winning team, led by Year 2 student Eugene Soon, walked away with a cash prize of $5,000.

Making Waves in Environmental Care

Five of our Diploma in Environmental Science (DENV) students bagged the Encouragement Award for the Green Wave Environmental Care Competition. The team received the award from Mr Ng Chee Meng, Minister for Education (Schools) and Second Minister for Transport, during the award presentation ceremony at the Marina Mandarin Hotel Singapore on 23 February 2017.


Age is Just a Number

The 10th Young Scientists’ Symposium (YSS) organised by the Singapore Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SSBMB), Singapore Society for Microbiology and Biotechnology (SSMB), and Science Centre Singapore proved that our young scientists have a lot to contribute. The Symposium last held on 8 March 2017 attracted a total of 71 final-year projects from all five local polytechnics, including 11 projects from SAS.

Four SAS students were recognised with the Polytechnic Student Research Programme (PSRP) Award on 22 March 2017 for their project, “Development of novel sunlight activated larvicides for effective vector control to fight against mosquito borne diseases”.

Dr Goh Chee Keong was awarded the SPRING Singapore Merit Award on 16 August 2017, at a ceremony held at Orchard Hotel, for his contributions to the Singapore Standardisation Programme for the chemical industry.

A project team from SAS won the MOE Innergy (Stat Board) GOLD Award 2016 for their work in diagnosing dengue serotypes and Chikungunya infection in a single step.

Going Green

Going Green Brings Its Own Rewards

Two teams from the Diploma in Environmental Science (DENV) and the Diploma in Material Science (DMTS) won awards at the 2016 Green Wave Environmental Care Competition.

The DENV team won the Commendation Award for their project "Organic waste management using black soldier flies", while the DMTS team won the Encouragement Award for their project "Developing new composites from incineration ash (IA)".

The Poster Team for SAS

SAS submitted 12 final-year student projects (FYPs) to the Young Scientists’ Symposium 2016, which attracted a total of 86 FYPs from across all the five local polytechnics.

Students from the Diploma in Pharmaceutical Sciences (DPHM) won the Best Poster award for their project “Development of novel anticancer compound for application in skin cancer treatment”.


Waste Not, Want Not

Held during the National Youth EnvirOlympics Challenge 2016, the ‘Love Food, Hate Waste!’ Case Competition saw participants devise feasible solutions to address food wastage problems.

Our SAS students did us proud, walking away with certificates and $100 Capital Land vouchers presented by Guest-of-Honour Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources.


First Patent

RP Scores Its First Patent

RP was granted its first patent in Singapore through one of our researcher’s work, “New chemical entities with potential applications in photodynamic cancer therapy”. Five DPHM students also took the top spot at the Polytechnic Student Research Programme 2015 and scored the Silver award for Best Poster at the Pharmaceutical Engineering Conference 2014 with their project, “Novel chemotherapeutic agents for potential application in photodynamic cancer therapy”.



SAS Wins a JEC Asia Innovation Award

JEC is the largest composite company in Europe and RP is proud to be one of just two Singaporean award recipients.

Our students from the Diploma in Material Science (DMTS) also presented their Enhanced Silk and Bamboo Composites project at the event. The new composite demonstrated a high tensile strength and durability comparable to steel, drawing interest from the luxury consumer brands such as Louis Vuitton.
