Congratulations to Diploma in Engineering Design with Business (DEDB) students who won 3rd prize in the Impact Festival Makeathon 2021. The Impact Festival Makeathon 2021 is organised by LionsForge, NWH holdings, and People's Association (PA).
In the 1-month long Makeathon, students from Institutes of Higher Learning took on the challenge to solve problems for Singaporeans with special needs and living in difficult circumstances. This includes people who require caregivers' attention, or households that live in small or rental HDB flats that cannot afford separate room for self-isolation. Students were required to use Autodesk Fusion 360 to conceptualise and showcase their ideas.
Eugene Lim and Jayven Koh from Team Cylock designed a protective shield that can be placed on the wheelchair to minimise contact between the wheelchair user, the helper and his family members when the wheelchair user is being isolated under the COVID-19 Home Recovery Programme (HRP).
Students were able to reflect and take away lessons through their participation of the Makeathon.
“… creativity is very important when innovating. This is because when designing the solution for the problem statement, we had to look at the kind of solutions which have already been implemented and how can we create something different.” - Jayven Koh
“One thing I learned during this Makeathon was that we shouldn’t doubt ourselves. As we are busy doing EIP, we tried to do a simple prototype that covers the problem statement given to us. We have a mindset that at least we went through this experience to help us develop a workable solution.” - Eugene Lim
