The Smart Engineering Technology Centre (SETC), serving as the R&D arm of the School of Engineering, provides innovative solutions to help industries adapt to the rapidly evolving technological landscape. It also offers an opportunity for RP staff and students to engage in capability development, ensuring that they remain industry-ready.

Focus Area

Robotics & Automation 

Robotics and Automation form an integral part of Industry 4.0, which is often referred to as the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It represents the integration of advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), big data, and automation into manufacturing and industrial practices. 

Urban Sustainability

Urban sustainability focuses on developing cities in ways that balance economic growth, environmental stewardship, and social equity. Key strategies include promoting green infrastructure, reducing carbon emissions, encouraging the use of renewable energy, and enhancing public transportation systems.

Healthcare Applications

Healthcare technologies encompass a wide range of innovations designed to enhance community health and the general quality of life. These include Assistive Technologies, Disinfectants, Antimicrobials, and Indoor Air Quality systems.

5G

5G technology is crucial because it significantly enhances the speed, capacity, and reliability of wireless networks, enabling faster data transfer, lower latency, and highly efficient connectivity. This advancement supports the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), smart cities, and autonomous vehicles, while also fostering innovations in healthcare, education, and entertainment.

Agrifood Innovation

Agrifood innovation is vital for ensuring global food security and sustainability in the face of growing population, climate change, and resource constraints. By developing new technologies and practices, agrifood innovation improves crop yields, enhances food quality, reduces waste, and promotes environmentally friendly farming methods.

The SETC relies on various facilities to achieve its objectives in providing innovative and practical solutions for the industry. Examples of these facilities are listed below.

RP-Daikin HVAC Solutions Lab

This facility is outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment designed to train our staff and students in addressing the challenges of implementing innovative Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) solutions.

Capabilities of this lab include Energy Efficient HVAC Solutions, Ventilation Strategies for Improved IAQ, Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS), Low/Energy HVAC for Indoor Agriculture and Dilution Air Processing and Purification Systems.

Smart Devices Lab

This lab has played a key role in supporting numerous industry-related projects, particularly in the areas of the Internet of Things (IoT), smart sensors, and computer vision, among others.

Capabilities of this lab include Internet of Things (IoT), Smart Sensors, Computer Vision, Robotics, Biomedical Electronics, Embedded Systems and Machine Learning

The Intersection

This facility played a key role in supporting industry projects in the field of electrical and autonomous vehicular technologies and 5G technology applications with a 5G microcell, which is a small cellular base station used to enhance 5G network coverage and capacity in localised areas.

Capabilities of this lab include Automotive Technology, Electric Vehicles (EVs), EV Charging Systems and Autonomous Vehicular Systems. The capability of 5G connectivity in this lab is enabled through a 5G microcell, which is designed to handle smaller, high-demand zones like urban centres, stadiums, shopping malls, or campuses.

Intelligent Robotic Automation Lab (IRA) lab

This lab with state-of-the-art equipment is designed to facilitate training and development of technology solutions by collaborating with industry partners in the fields of Industrial Internet of Things (IOT), robotics and automation.

Capabilities of this lab include Smart Adaptive Robotics Systems, NLP Robotic Programming, 3D Vision Pick and Place, REST/API Autonomous Development and Digital Twin Modelling with a range of industrial robots, cobots, and autonomous mobile robots.

Industry Projects Highlights

Project: Underwater Health and Safety Monitoring for Commercial Divers

Industry Partner: Maschine Technology Pte Ltd

In this project, an underwater health monitoring system was developed for commercial divers, enabling real-time, location-aware health and safety tracking. The system was designed to provide swift and accurate responses, including rescue services when necessary. The final product was a wearable device that tracks position and monitors health status specifically for underwater environments.


Project: Smart Coatings for Enhanced Efficiency and Low Maintenance Solar Panels

Industry Partner: Three Summit Ventures Pte Ltd

In this project, the use of vapour-phase technology in designing coating layers improved both transmission and adhesion to the coated surface, overcoming the limitations of existing commercial vapour and wet solution-based self-cleaning coatings. This enhancement led to a more efficient application in solar energy harvesting. Additionally, the coatings feature superior super-hydrophilic surfaces, offering an effective anti-fogging solution.


Project: Grading and Sorting of Harvest using Machine Learning Techniques

Industry Partner: Enfarm Pte Ltd

In this project, a machine learning system was created, specifically engineered to recognise, categorise, and harvest agricultural produce for indoor farming. Developed a kale detection model with an accuracy surpassing 90%. The data generated by the model was seamlessly transmitted to both IoT platforms and cloud servers, facilitated remote monitoring. In addition, it accomplished the wireless acquisition, transmission, and logging of crucial sensor parameters—specifically temperature, relative humidity, and CO2, meeting the additional requirements set by the industry partner.
