Students match the type of dress-code to the pictures given and learn to choose the right attire for the relevant formal settings.

After months of preparation, School of Hospitality (SOH) transforms a truck into a mobile counselling vehicle to share educational and career options information with secondary school students from Outram Secondary School, Yuying Secondary School, Unity Secondary School, Teck Whye Secondary School and Kuo Chuan Secondary School.  Experienced lecturers and counsellors from the school eagerly shared their knowledge with more than 400 secondary schools from 21-23 May 2018.

Here are some of the School of Hospitality’s First-Ever Mobile Counselling Outreach Roadshow highlights:

Mobile Counselling Truck Design

The mobile truck were designed in a way to fully represent SOH – as versatile as it can gets! It showcased the human icons in various occupations in the hospitality industry. Students could enter the truck to enjoy a game of puzzle or to have a career chat with a counsellor about their further studies.

Attire-ready or not?

Hospitality resonates greatly with good attitude and service. To achieve that, professional self-image and presentation are of equal importance. However, many students may not have any idea about the types of business attires that are appropriate for different occasions, e.g. interview, networking session or even proper basic office outfit.  Through the game, students could match the type of dress-code to the pictures given and learn to choose the right attire for the relevant formal settings.

The Price is Right!

A game that resembles The Price is Right game! Would students know the average price of an executive suite, junior room, standard hotel room and many other types of hotel rooms?  Through this game, we are amazed that the secondary school students are quite well-informed and most of them guessed it right! But the most important takeaway would be, no matter which type of hotel room one is staying in, the same service and attitude should be applied to maintain the level of professionalism.

Wheel of Career Spin

Do you believe that whichever future career one might choose could be contributed by a hint of luck? If so, try spinning the Wheel of Career! Students were attracted by the visually appealing wheel that featured the wide range of jobs and discipline of study that can be found in the business and hospitality industry. By talking to the counsellors, students got to understand the job scopes and job prospects of their “spun” choices. Students also got to participate in a grand lucky draw that would entitle them to win attractive prizes!

Art of Table Setting

When we head to a fine dining restaurant, some of us might be attracted by the delicate table napkin folding or the elaborate table set-up.  During the roadshow, students got an opportunity to experience setting the table and learn the art of napkin fold. It took effort to truly master the art of folding napkin professionally.  Guidance from the counsellors from the Diploma in Culinary and Restaurant Operations helped!

How Well Do You Know the Wellness Industry Puzzle?

Want to find out the value chain of the wellness industry or the type of lifestyle and dietary needs that people could be seeking?  During the roadshow, students unraveled the wellness trends by playing the puzzle.

Fun with Sorbet making and tasting

Who doesn’t love dessert, moreover, especially the healthy version of ice cream, sorbet? Freshly churned out by the sorbet maker, the sorbet was most popular among students.

The mobile truck was a novel experience for both the hospitality counsellors as well as the secondary school students. We hope that they have enjoyed themselves, because we certainly do! Stay tuned for the next round of mobile truck roadshow with even more surprises, at your school compound!
