Service-learning projects put academic learning into community service. It benefits the students as service learners and the communities they serve.
In a service-learning project, students are engaged in real-world problem-solving and meaningful action. As they share their knowledge and skills to address community needs, they gain a deeper understanding of their field of study, develop essential life skills, and cultivate empathy and civic responsibility. Furthermore, a service-learning project inspires a lifelong commitment to social responsibility and active citizenship.
Through our service-learning projects, SOI students use—and practise—the knowledge and skills they learn at school as they teach youths and the elderly how to leverage technology.

Our students embarked on an inspiring service-learning journey, leveraging their tech expertise to teach Python programming to younger learners. This initiative not only strengthened their leadership and mentoring abilities but also ignited a passion for coding in the next generation. Through engaging hands-on activities and interactive lessons, they transformed complex concepts into simple, enjoyable learning experiences. By making programming approachable and exciting, they empowered young minds to explore the endless possibilities of technology.
Students from the School of Infocomm embarked on a series of inspiring service-learning projects designed to empower the elderly in their community. Through interactive workshops, they taught essential skills in mobile photography and simple photo editing, inspiring creativity, and confidence among participants.
With patience and enthusiasm, the students guided the elderly in capturing memories, framing shots, and enhancing photos. This heartwarming initiative not only introduced the elderly to new technologies but also strengthened intergenerational bonds, showcasing the timeless beauty of storytelling and creativity.
Organised in collaboration with IMDA’s SG Digital Office, these projects exemplify the power of learning to connect and inspire across generations.
In collaboration with Mendaki, our students conducted the Python for Kids Workshop in September 2022.
It was a fun-filled day and a great learning experience for both the students as well as the primary schoolers. Some classic old-school yet entertaining games broke the ice before they proceeded to explore the basic coding of Python.
At the end of the workshop, the primary schoolers were thrilled with the avatar that they coded.
The Python for Beginners Workshop aimed to introduce the programming language to secondary school students through hands-on exercises and mini-projects. It helped participants understand that coding is not just about scripting but also about creativity and problem-solving.
In a Local Service-Learning Project with Mendaki, SOI students facilitated a full-day learning journey for some forty (40) secondary school students. They were taught how to code for their first programming project.
A coding workshop was organised by students from the Diploma in Business Information Systems for the residents of Boys’ Town, a home for children and youths from disadvantaged and disengaged families in our community. The workshop aimed to teach them Python programming.
Participants learnt how to write a programme to guide a ‘robot’ out of a maze. The game-like environment made learning more fun and engaging. At the same time, the workshop also enabled SOI students to learn about social issues, develop skills in community engagement, and foster empathy, problem-solving abilities, and civic responsibility. Both the beneficiaries from Boys Town and SOI students also gained in personal growth and development.
By introducing basic Python coding through a game, we enhanced digital literacy, developed skills that are vital in today’s digital age, empowered disadvantaged and disengaged youths in our community, and made a positive impact on their lives.
