The team bonded over countless hours of hard work, and pushed forward with a common goal in mind, i.e., to come up with an IT solution that would benefit St Luke’s Eldercare, and make their call for volunteers and donation operations more efficient. Through this competition, the team developed an invaluable trait–to be proactive and have initiative.

“Despite working tirelessly, we were able to have fun and enjoy ourselves during the process”, shared Ng Jin Wei as he commends his teammates for their tenacity.

Talking about the competition, team leader, Jason Gu Yaochen said, “This journey was not easy for us. We sacrificed a lot of our free time to develop this project. Through this journey, we’ve gained a lot, such as developing better design thinking skills, learning a new programming language and most importantly, and acquiring resilience.”

The winning team was composed of the final year students Jason Gu Yaochen (Module Prize winner, Network infrastructure, AY18), Tan Qian Ting (Module Prize winner, Internetworking Security, AY18), Eric Lim (Scholarship recipient), Ng Jin Wei (Director’s Roll of Honour), and Xiong Wenxi (RP Scholarship recipient).

Diploma in Information Technology Students win the Second Prize in the 2019 Hua Wei Developer Challenge - Atlas AI Track.

The duo presented the solution of creating a mediated learning environment system using Huawei Atlas DK 200. The students impressed the judges with their presentation and real-time demonstration of their prototype. The team’s solution included use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to analyse electroencephalogram (EEG) readings to manage and improve concentration levels of learners. The system also deployed Machine Learning to fine tune the algorithm for optimal management of concentration phases. Internet of Things (IoT) Technology was used to control lighting and other devices to create a conducive environment for studying.  Additionally, AI was used for facial recognition and facial expression classification which was then calibrated with data and text analytics of learners’ reflections and forum discussions to give feedback to learners and developers of their learning materials.
