Launch of "Himawari Wellness" App

RP launched a mobile app, “Himawari Wellness”, at the Singapore Mental Health Conference (SMHC) on 30 Jan 2019, graced by President Halimah Yacob. This app is jointly developed by School of Sports, Health and Leisure (SHL) and School of Infocomm (SOI); supported by School of Management and Communication (SMC) with a marketing video

SOI staff Lydia Hamid, was part of this meaningful project, which touches the hearts and minds of the community using smart technology.

Public Sector Transformation Awards Winners 2018

Public Sector Transformation Awards 2018 Winners_resized

Zek Hazley (PC/DIDM) and Vincent Ng (Lecturer, DIDM) were part of the Graduation Name Reading Team from RP to be awarded the Star Service Team Award in 2018 Public Sector Transformation Awards. The team developed an in-house name reading system as part of a cross collaborative project across RP schools and offices.

This project had not only saved cost in the organizing of graduation ceremony, the team also worked hard to bring about several enhancements, including the introduction of pressure mats at Graduation Ceremony 2018.

Health Innovation Technology (HIT) Challenge 2016

HIT Challenge 2016

A prototype healthcare solution co-developed by Assistant Director (Capability & Industry) Mr Seow Khee Wei and Senior Lecturer Mr Ng Tek Ming with Changi General Hospital nurses came in third in the Health Innovation Technology Challenge 2016.

The project was the only winning entry co-developed by a polytechnic in the competition, which was organised by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, the National Healthcare Group and the Serious Games Association (Singapore). 

The prototype uses image processing and machine learning to identify and count medical instruments. 

The tool is envisioned to increase operating room staff efficiency, decrease the number of human errors and to ensure that nothing is left in the stomach after surgery. The team is currently exploring the possibility of testing and implementing their healthcare solution in actual operating rooms, with Eastern Health Alliance.

Ms Wong Wai Ling, Covering Director for SOI, was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) for her outstanding efficiency, service and industry, at the National Day Awards ceremony on 6 November 2016.

Singtel Cyber Security Cadet Scholarship

3 students from the Diploma in Information Security Management received the Singtel Cyber Cadet Scholarship on 9 November 2018. They are Pan Shi Han, Johnny, Khoo Yee Loon and Oliver Tan Yi Yan.

This scholarship programme is targeted at students who have the passion and drive to work in Singtel and contribute with their knowledge and skills to make the world a better place.

The recipients not only need to fulfil excellent academic results, their interest to embark on a cyber security career in Singtel and passion in innovation and technology were also tested through interviews.

KOSEN-Joint Polytechnic Start-up Programme


In this inaugural run of the programme, three students from each of the five polytechnics in Singapore teamed up with three other students from selected Kosen institutes in Japan to ideate and develop projects which would benefit society or solve social problems.

RP Team consisting of Andrew Ong and Daniel Poh (DIT), Darius Boey (DMC, SMC) was awarded Certificate of Excellence at KOSEN-Joint Polytechnic Start-up Programme.

Visa Business Case Challenge: Runner-up FinTech cashless payment solution

Visa Business Case Challenge

Two SOI student teams participated in the Visa Business Case Challenge at Visa University (Singapore) on 17 July 2017. Both Team A.F.C. and Team PolyGen pitched to Visa Singapore their financial technology (or FinTech) solutions to make cashless payment at hawker centres quick, seamless and secure for customers and hawkers alike.

Cyber Defenders Discovery Camp: Silver in cyber defence

Eight students from RP's Diploma in Infocomm Security Management (DISM) attended the 5th Cyber Defenders Discovery Camp, organised by the Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA), and won silver in the five-day cybersecurity camp’s competitive segment.

For the first three days, students participated in intensive hands-on laboratory work and learned from DSTA cyber defence professionals various cyber defence methodologies, which included:

  • monitoring networks and systems
  • identifying and responding to cyber incidents
  • analysing digital forensic evidence 

The camp culminated in a two-day competition where teams of four pitted their new cyber defence knowledge and skills against one other in a series of simulated real-world challenges to attack or defend IT networks and systems.

Team SOI placed second, beating nearly 400 other post-secondary and tertiary students.

6th International Symposium on Technology for Sustainability: Most Outstanding Case Study Project Presentation


Daryl Goh, a second-year Diploma in Business Information Systems (DBIS) student, was awarded the Most Outstanding Case Study Project Presentation for his poster presentation at the 6th International Symposium on Technology for Sustainability, held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in October 2016. 

Cisco Networking Academy NetRiders 2016 CCNA Competition: Best in APAC

A third-year RP student bested more than 200 other post-secondary and tertiary students to emerge tops in the second round of the Asian-Pacific leg of the Cisco Networking Academy NetRiders 2016 CCNA Competition on 15 September 2016. 

Ee Xian Hui, a third-year from the Diploma in Information Technology (DIT) programme, was also the competition’s highest ranking competitor nationally in the Cisco Certified Network Associate, or CCNA, category. 

The annual contest, organised by Cisco, tests participants’ communication and presentation skills in addition to their interactive networking skills with Cisco’s web technologies. 

Following his win, Xian Hui will advance to the final round of the Asian-Pacific leg of the competition, held in October 2016, standing the chance to win a study trip to Cisco’s headquarters in San Jose, CA, the United States of America, as well as a CCNA or CCNA Security certification voucher.

Also bagging third place in the competition is Lee Moon Yuan, Max, a fellow DIT student.

Both are known for their dedication, commitment and never-say-die attitude, even when they were up against much stronger opponents and defending champions.

Splash Awards 2016: Mobile Game award

Three students from the RP Diploma in Mobile Software Development programme – Muhammad Herwan, Mohamed Asif and Simon Kwok Xiang Wen – competed against 80 other secondary, post-secondary and tertiary students in August 2016 at Splash Awards 2016, organised by the Singapore Computer Society.

The trio – “El Hasmano” – created the second most creative and innovative cyber wellness Mobile Game of the competition, and placed third in the Tertiary category at the Finals & Talents Showcase. 

They were also the only team to clinch awards from both the Mobile Game and Tertiary categories.

WorldSkills Singapore is a nationwide vocational skills competition held every two years to select local youths to represent Singapore on the international stage at the biennial WorldSkills Competition (WSC).


WorldSkills Singapore 2016: Medallion for Excellence 


WorldSkills Singapore is a nationwide vocational skills competition held every two years to select local youths to represent Singapore on the international stage at the biennial WorldSkills Competition (WSC). 

In July 2016, SOI competed in the twelfth series of the competition to represent Singapore at the 44th WSC in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, in two skills categories – Web Design and IT Networks Systems Administration. 

Third-year Diploma in Information Technology student Lee Moon Yuan Max clinched the Medallion for Excellence in the latter skills category, after three days of intense competition against students from other post-secondary and tertiary institutions as well as working IT professionals. 

For Max, the award served to validate the two years of hands-on training he did in multimedia creation and integration, web design, programming server-side application, and client-side implementation. 

WorldSkills Singapore 2018: Medallion for Excellence

Among 8 teams of participants across polytechnics, ITE and universities, RP’s team of students from Diploma in Infocomm Security Management, Pan Shi Han Johnny and Yu Yao Ming, Ryan were awarded Medallion of Excellence in the Cyber Security skill area.

Medallions of Excellence are awarded to Competitors who achieve above-average scores in their contest areas.
