Mr Muhammad Syahirul Annuar Musa graduated from Republic Polytechnic majoring in rail operations management for his Diploma in Engineering Systems and Management (DESM), found a job placement as a Train Service Controller with the SMRT. He had completed several months of internship with SBS Transit-Downtown Line Operations Controller centre during his final year. He was exposed to railway operations from holistic and multi-levels perspective to enhance his skills and knowledge.

In conjunction with the opening of the new RP-LTA Rail Operations Management lab in January 2019, RP signed a joint MoU with LTA, SMRT Corporation (SMRT) and SBS Transit with objective to further develop a future industry-ready workforce of skills individual. The lab provides an authentic, realistic and experimental learning experience through the simulation of the automated driverless railway system. The lab features an Integrated Supervisory Control System (ISCS) which allows retrieval of inputs in addition to remote control of field equipment for sub-systems in trains, tunnels and stations. There is also a Video Wall Display which features critical systems’ schematics akin to actual urban rail line.

Our DESM students like Mr Syahirul benefitted from the various fault scenarios and role play activities injected in our lab simulation which make sense of the real-world problem context. He affirms theories acquired in classroom are better understood via hands-on experience which engage students in more interesting and deeper learning. DESM also aims to address the manpower needs of the growing ‘sunrise’ rail industry in Singapore. Mr Yeo Li Pheow, principal of RP, highlighted such partnerships are of great importance when industries need a highly skilled and adaptable workforce that is ahead of the curve.
